Quote from: Smit on January 06, 2025, 09:52 AMThe wife and I went to Las Vegas a few years ago. She had a business convention and I went along for the fun of it, so while she was doing work things I was doing Larry things. I didn't do much gambling, only one time because the wife wanted to. Lost some quick money to slots and didn't have much fun doing it.

On the rare occasions we go to the Casinos around here we go for the crab leg or prime rib buffets. I get my moneys worth on those meals. If the people we go with want to gamble I'll play video poker just to stay amused. You can play a long time on those machines for $20 so that's kind of fun.

And we do get together for Texas hold 'em poker games on occasion. $10 buy in and play for a few hours, winner takes the pot.

Yeah I recall you posting about that at the time.
I would probably do the same thing if I were in your position.

However, when we were having dinner at the Mohegan Casino recently, all of the restaurants are located around the central gaming floor, so if you are sitting close to the entry side of the restaurant you can see people playing on the gaming floor while you are eating.

To me, playing slots is the most mind-numbing activity I can think of, and sure enough, as we were eating, an elderly couple were playing slots about 20 feet away from me all the while we were having dinner.
They both had these glazed expressions on their faces, like they were in a trance or something.
Neither looked at the other or spoke to each other for the whole time we were there, and they were still there, completely mesmerized by those machines when we left.

Maybe that is their idea of fun, and they certainly weren't hurting anyone, but to me that kind of mind-numbing activity is the opposite of fun.

I have some friends who like to gamble. Everything from sports betting to pull tabs to occasional trips to the Casino.

The one thing that I noticed that almost everyone I know that likes to gamble. If you ask them, nobody ever loses. Every single one of them claim that they always come out ahead.

That's funny considering statistics show that less than 5% of gamblers make more money than they lose.  I must know all of the winners.

I NEVER gamble. Not even a lottery ticket.

Yeah, I can imagine there is quite a bit of self-delusion in the hardcore gambling community.

They can easily fool themselves into forgetting the first and only rule...

THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS!!!
