What is the purpose of this? I'm not seeing any benefit over a 3 axis helical path.
And how can Mastercam do this?

RobertELee

To drill a larger hole than the bit you have? At that point though, I don't see why you wouldn't just helix an endmill?

You can get to this kind of path with some time spent with a Unified multiaxis path, spiral, and roughing offsets.

I think it has benefits in some very specific scenarios with a combination of application and tool factors. It's certainly a niche toolpath specialization.

It seems like a whole lot on unnecessary wear and tear on the machine to me.

From watching this video I think the main advantage is chip evacuation

Yeah to me it looks like a lot of unnecessary movement and just showcasing 5 axis rotation to impress people?
I'll stick with 3 axis helical.
But I was hoping I was missing something, I guess not.
Thanks guys!

You do a lot of material removal with the face of the endmill, too, and have to understand if you have a non-center-cutting endmill, what the instantaneous plunge/face engagement might be at rotational transitions along the path, etc.

HyperShill shilling HyperShill stuff.

I've done exactly the same thing with Port toolpath. Really it's NOTHING new. And NOTHING that hasn't been done do at least 10-15 years.

I remember seeing a similar path many years ago at IMTS...I believe at the Methods/Matsuura booth.
At least in this example they are showing how this might be a little useful to avoid holders when reaching in a deep bore. That being said I have never seen this used outside of a tool show.

Jump to around the 1:20 mark.

Thats how you really optimize. Go hard until you break the machine then back off 20%. If I got free machines that's how i'd run shit too!

The 2 big Okuma's I run have a 5000 pound capacity and I use it all frequently
The though of all 5 axis flying around like that  while carrying 5000 pounds, just to drill a hole really makes me cringe.

That was programmed with PowerMill. IIRC it was Mike Kaminski. This is when CAMplete really made an appearance.
