This is a paraphrase from court testimony. They had transcripts of the GChat messages.

"On February 28, 2011, Bates gave Ulbricht an ultimatum, saying over Gchat messages read aloud in court, "I'm forbidding you from asking me about your secret project unless you are going to reveal it." Shortly after that, Ulbricht caved in, showing Bates the Silk Road site in an Austin apartment.

"I'm working on a website where people can buy drugs," Bates recounted Ulbricht told him."

Quote from: mkd on January 23, 2025, 04:34 AMSo was that a yes or a no??????

That is a NO. I'm not OK with it. I think it sets a bad precedence.

I don't know that I agree with the length of his sentence either, but I could say that about a LOT of people. I could have said it about myself 20 years ago.

Where did I say that I was OK with murders walking free? You want to talk about a straw man?

He didn't just "set up a website"  You're minimizing what he did to rationalize your argument.

Oh yea, I forgot.. it's just a psyop.

"Biden" was letting more drugs into this country in one day than this guy sold the entire duration of the website's existence. What does that tell you? Maybe "Biden" should get eleventy life sentences?

You guys really reach for some crazy shit some times.

How much drugs crossed the border under Trump? Should he get sentenced based on that?  Should we just let all drug dealers off scott free because of it?

I'm starting to think that drug trafficking is now acceptable to Conservatives?

I need a bigger roll eyes emoji

Quote from: ghuns on January 23, 2025, 04:10 AMIt was created specifically for anonymous activity.

Should the inventor of Bitcoin be locked up for creating an anonymous payment system that some use for criminal activities?

In this case, Bitcoin would be synonymous with a gun. (could be used for good or bad, but it's just a tool.)

the website is synonymous with a black market used to get guns into the hands of criminals.

I also personally believe, that Trump made a bad call letting this guy go.

I was a lot more sympathetic toward him before I started digging deeper in to the case.

When people in the thread start talking about the government being worried about the competition, I have to wonder what they're talking about? Crypto? If that's the case and crypto is the biggest reason for his sentence, you would think that he would be able to win an appeal at this point. Look at crypto now. It's far more popular now than it was when he was convicted.

How much did Trump do to stop the flow vs "Biden"?

According to your logic, Biden and Trump should get 10,000 death sentences

https://www.justice.gov/pardon/pardons-granted-president-joseph-biden-2021-present

List of drug dealers pardoned by Biden all getting months long sentences plus some murderes.
But yeah... Pardoning a website creator inexplicable sentenced to eternity in prison is a bad call.
Nutz!

Don't you see what you are doing there, though, by reducing what he's doing to "website creator"?

That is no different that if somebody reduces Pete Hedgeseth to just a Fox commentator. Was Capone was just a distributor?

Surely you can look far enough down the road to realize that, just like Amazon was an online bookstore to becoming the world's biggest supplier of "anything".  That this website might have started out trafficking in drugs to growing into Iran using it to supply weapons to Hezbollah.

or even Iran using it to send money to some kid in Pennsylvania to K.O. a presidential candidate.

Biden created the conditions at the border that led to innumerable crimes and fentanyl deaths.. so that is exactly your logic
