Curious if any of you elderly older gents have decided to get the Covid vaccine?

Yes, I use the term vaccine loosely

I had two friends, not unlike myself, overweight and diabetic, both contract it and suffer greatly. One was in ICU for 3 weeks and nearly died, the other, not so dramatic but is still somewhat down nearly 6 weeks later.

I wound up on the 1B list in NH and decided to register for it...had my 1st shot 3 weeks ago, 2nd is next week.

In Canada here.

I am likely in Phase 2 and my job might require it as we are dealing with students. Likely beween May and June.

Question is if you have a choice of vaccines which one would you choose?

Pfizer
Moderna
Oxford/Zeneca
Johnson&Johnson

To your question...the Oxford/Zenaca, I don't think that one is approved in the US as yet....as such, not available....

I got the Moderna

That said, I dunno if I had the choice. I've read plenty on the Moderna & Pfizer, they are rather similar in many ways. The J&J since it was approved after I got my 1st shot, I haven't looked into at all. It is of course the only single shot one available in the US at this point.

As it's early on, in NH anyway, you don't get a choice, you make your appointment, show up, what they have available that day is what you get. They do inform you which and you always have the choice to say no, though finding another appointment might be tough and in the end, the option might well be the same.

Between the Pfizer and Moderna will depend on your location. Pfizer is more difficult to store because of the super low temperature required so it will only be available in locations that are capable of storing it. Moderna is a little easier to store so it will be the one available in the less equipped clinics.

And you likely won't get a choice.

They said up here you won't have a choice either.

I was just wondering if you had the choice what would you get.

Me being in my 30s and decent health I'd go with the JnJ just for the ease of the single dose and to save the other vaccines for the more at risk. It has a significantly lower efficacy of around 75%, but I'd just do it to help lower possible symptoms and lower the spread if I ever get infected.

Since Pfizer and Moderna have about 95% efficacy they are better suited for the older and more immunocompromised.

They won't give the Oxford/Zeneca one to anyone over 65 here.

They are getting a bunch of expiring Oxford/Zeneca made in India shots here....talking about giving it to the inmates at the jails! ROUR
