Yeah, a baked bean sammich is ghetto.

We have baked beans on toast, with cheese on top. Basic food.

Baked beans in a can a thing over there?

Other food differences?

We call Sprite or 7 Up lemonade here.

Your corndogs we call hot dogs. Your hot dogs we call American Hot Dogs

Your chips, we call potato chips (or the Pommie imports call them crisps)

Your fries, we call hot chips (though they're called Fries at McDonalds or Burger King)

And we dont have mint M and M's here. Dammmit....

How's the Mexican food? If I want good Mexican food while living in Michigan I have to travel to Canada or West Virginia to get it.

Quote from: Jeff on January 30, 2025, 11:08 AMBecause some people want to torture themselves with a 20+ hour flight and have thousands and thousands of dollars to blow on plane tickets. lol
Everything I've seen tells me it's a gorgeous country.
And fast becoming a haven for the fragile people who's feelings are easily hurt. Like the West coast of the USA.

Honestly, yes, our country has some great scenery. We're a typically friendly country, though crime is on the rise here.

Yeah, it has a lot of fragile sensitive people, but we also have tough hard bastards too. During both World Wars we exonerated ourselves. The winner of two Victoria Crosses lived in my province, and is buried at one of our local churches.

It is about a 12 hour flight from LA.

Our last government was terrible, with that horrible woke left prime minister. Thankfully she is gone.

What sucks about living here, is the cost of living, and the distance to travel to other countries. It takes about thirty hours (including transits) to get to Europe. And it isn't cheap to get there.

Yeah, I experienced the 2010 and 2011 quakes.

I was in the programming office when the 2011 one struck. Imagine a big machine shop, shaking like crazy. We all got out of the building, and went to the assembly point. While standing there, experienced an aftershock. Saw the ripple go through the ground the ground, and the managers car bounce off the ground. Not long after someone got a message saying there were casualties in the CBD.

It was a crappy time. Loss of electricity regularly, gas mains were switched off. The cellular network overloaded (weirdly, the landlines still worked)

A good friend of mine was a Detective Inspector in the Police, working in homicide. He was put in charge of investigating every death, and reconciliating the remains. He then was put in charge of investigating malpractice in one of the big building collapses. He died a few years later from a brain tumour. Several people believed it was the stress of all that work, that killed.

The city still isn't back to what it was.

Mexican food is popular here. We have a couple of really good Mexican places in the CBD. We also have a great Mexican takeaway place locally which is pretty good.

Being the stoopid American that I am , I always view NZ as a Tiny a speck of rock in the Ocean.

and can't imagine Manufacturing or other aspects.

Kinda like Hawaii but Farther away.

I remember the quake in Christchurch and thought there wasn't much there.

In Montana most shops are 1 person or 2 person shops not a lot there.

Unless you can find a major supplier and there are very few.
