Well, I guess the city regulated a bunch of people out of a job.

Force business that are already under-performing in a pandemic to pay wages they couldn't afford before the pandemic and watch them fold. Good job Seattle.

QuoteQFC announced Tuesday it is closing down two of its Seattle stores after the city last month passed an ordinance requiring large grocery stores to pay eligible employees an extra $4 per hour in hazard pay during the coronavirus pandemic.

The company said the two stores -- in Capitol Hill at 416 15th Ave. E and Wedgewood at 8400 35th Ave. NE -- were underperforming, but the decision to close the stores was "accelerated" after Seattle's hazard pay ordinance. The two stores will stay open until April 24.

Quote"Unfortunately, Seattle City Council didn't consider that grocery stores -- even in a pandemic -- operate on razor-thin profit margins in a very competitive landscape. When you factor in the increased costs of operating during COVID-19, coupled with consistent financial losses at these two locations, and this new extra pay mandate, it becomes impossible to operate a financially sustainable business."

QFC is a local chain but is owned by Kroger.

Because QFC is owned by Kroger, there won't be much local sympathy for the store closures or people who lost their jobs.  I mean, they should have made better choices, right?

It was even better than I thought. The city council came out an said that Kroger shutting down these two stores is an intimidation tactic used to keep other cities from passing hazard pay legislation and had nothing to do with the stores not being profitable.

Zero of the City Council members have ever owned a business.  They've read about them in books while staying at a Holiday Inn express though.

My opinion on this would be different if it weren't for these few things.

The employees at the stores were interviewed and said that they were happy and receiving bonuses already due to covid. They are more upset about losing their jobs than anything.

The City didn't just impose the hazard pay. They also prevent the stores from changing or reducing hours or doing anything else that would help them compensate for their loss in profits. That in itself it total bull shit.

The city itself has employees that are considered essential and they aren't paying them the hazzard pay.  Why? They say that they can't afford it.  Duh.

I know that grocery store employees are at a higher risk than I am.  I work every day, but I spend most of my time with the same group of people and are usually distanced. We don't have 100's of people coming in that we have to work in close contact with every single day.  That should be negotiated with their union, not forced by government.  You have to wonder how this is even legal.

We saw these same stores almost close when the City tried to pass that head tax that was repealed. It was hard not to see it coming.  Business has been closing in record numbers already due to covid restrictions.

ST's daughter lives in Kshama Sawant's district.   I don't know that I'm allowed to say the things on the forum that they say about that woman.
