Quote from: Smit on February 25, 2025, 08:30 AMI messed around with the guitar decades ago. I couldn't read music and know nothing about it really. I just learned some chords and played some simple stuff. At one time I could play the acoustic start of "Stairway to heaven" very well, and that was as far as I got. I've long since forgotten it now. :(

I bought an acoustic guitar about 10 years ago with the intention of spending some time with it but soon it was put on the back burner because of other stuff.

Now that I have a "little" more time on my hands I should give it another try. I'd rather not pay money for lessons so do you guys have web sources to go to for help learning to play.

I get several songs from YouTube and I have several songbooks with Tabs. I'd suggest getting a book with chord shapes.

I think youtube is a great way to learn songs or lots of other stuff about guitars. I told a friend that once and he said "yeah, but it's hard to see on my phone" so, hint, use it on your tv.

Quote from: beej on February 25, 2025, 07:53 AMhow many of you guys can read sheet music? There is an old joke that goes something like, "nothing stops a good guitarist in his tracks like a copy of sheet music."

I can read sheet music on a very basic level, but nothing like my piano playing friends.

I was taking guitar lessons from a jazz musician back in the 90's. To him, music theory came first, then getting good at the guitar. I tried to learn how to read music and keep up with his lessons but was lagging behind so bad that I started learning how to play the songs he was giving me the sheet music for by ear so I could play them at the next lesson.

He pulled a fast one on me one day and pulled the sheet, put down different one and said "play this". I had no idea what I was looking at.  He kicked me out of the class that day and told me to find a teacher that would teach me some riffs.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I taught myself to play when I was 10 years old by just getting a book that had chord diagrams in it. and then I picked up some books of a few artists, like Hank Williams Senior, and once I had learned where to put my fingers to play the chords, the strumming rhythm came natural. Once I could play a little bit, I started playing with some people I knew at gatherings and then I learned a lot about how to apply what I was learning.

Now, if you can think of the song, you can get the chords to it on line. or the tabs, if you want to play lead.

You know you're getting old when you injure yourself making a barre chord. 😝

My hands are so gnarly that when I try to make one my index finger won't stay on just one fret.

I doubt I have the dexterity to do much with a guitar now.

Maybe I never have.

You should try. Maybe it would help.

An electric would be easier on the hands.

I've heard that electrics are more forgiving on the fingers. If I decide to give it another go I'll check into that.

I love that song. Can you sing it? I heard that Ronny Dunn of Brooks and Dunn had to be talked into it, because he thought that he sounded dumb singing it. I wish I sounded as "bad" as he does.
