Quote from: Smit on March 27, 2025, 10:24 AM...Do you think it's just a little suspicious that Musks companies are positioned to be in a better market spot because of Trumps decisions?...

All companies that rely more heavily on domestic manufacturing are in a better position.

The other car companies have become 100% dependent on cheap Chinese manufacturing. They bear the bulk of the responsibility for decimating our manufacturing base in the US. They will quickly find that sourcing parts, tooling, and components domestically is damn near impossible because they have driven most of their suppliers out of business.

Ford is the absolute worst of them all. They are now basically demanding, cause that's what Ford does, that we build them tools domestically for China prices. Never mind that we'd be out of business in 6 months if we tried. The bottom line is we simply lack the warm bodies to do the work. We have went from a shop of 30 moldmakers to 15, mostly due to retirement. There are NO young moldmakers to replace them. For fuck sake, at 52, I AM a young moldmaker. They then demand we invest millions in automation to do the work of 30 with 15. Sure, that'll work. And the fuckin second the tariffs are reduced they will run straight back to China.

If any company's cars should be firebombed for the sake of a political statement, it should be theirs and their Big 3 brethren who created this mess. They can all go eat a bag of dicks.

I feel like we're about to hit a milestone here. Our two choices are going to be to pay the tariffs, or pay higher prices for vehicles due to increased manufacturing costs.  The average price for a vehicle is already around $47,000? I think we're about to hit a point that the middle class is no longer going to be able to afford to purchase a new vehicle without going in to crippling debt.

Maybe we'll be able to celebrate moving jobs back to the US inside of the next decade? Nobody will be able to afford anything.

Vast majority of people buying new vehicles now are in crippling debt. One of the worst financial decisions people make that finance them. Doubt I ever buy another vehicle.

That's a perfect question. Why Trump is not building training facilities and pushing the trades like Mike Rowe makes me scratch my head. It would benefit everyone.

I don't think I'll ever be able to afford one. My current vehicle is a 2016 and I'm about to take it in to get a full service on the thing including all fluids flushed and replaced. I'm hoping I can get at least 250,000 miles on it.

"Average US Car Payment
As of the latest data, the average monthly car payment for new cars in the U.S. is $742, while for used cars, it is $525.
These figures reflect the current trends in auto financing, with new car payments being significantly higher than those for used cars. "

I just paid off our Equinox. I still had 40 payments left. I hate having debt.

I haven't had a vehicle payment in almost 8 years and I just payed my mortgage off. I'm 100% debt free other than pesky property tax.

My goal is to start plugging away at retirement savings but I'm not sure how to approach that. I'm not smart enough to play the market and the guy managing our 401k is less than not helpful.

Agreed, but that would be assuming that Trump actually gives one shit about the middle class voters he so adeptly duped into voting for him.

None of us on this message board are part of the group that will benefit from his economic policies.

My credit score has dropped 15 points since I paid off my mortgage.

That just seems unfair.

I don't think it was as much people being "duped" as it was inflation fatigue.  The economy was pretty damn good when he was president the first time and people remember that. We can argue who benefited the most from that presidency but that's another story for another time.  :D

I don't see how the middle class doesn't pay dearly by the time this is over unless something changes.
