Right
If importers pay it, why would other countries be 'mad' as reported in the media?

My guess would be that if the end user ultimately ends up paying the tariff or a portion of it on a given item, that the sales of said item would drop thus reducing the amount being sold and costing the country of origin lost sales revenue.

Which was the point of the original post. :)

Or... Just maybe the chi-coms lower their prices to compensate all or a portion of the tariff

I know that this is off topic, but that last post made me wonder what your thoughts on "sin taxes" are. ie raising taxes on alcohol, tobacco, etc. It's a similar concept, tax the heck out of things that you wish people would use less of.

Because they need the dumbsmit sheep to think the rest of the world is laughing at us.
When in reality they kept their mouths shut the last 4 years and promoted Bidenomics and told us that Biden was the best version ever!!

It's the lefty media staying with their agenda.

You just end up with a lot of whining about unfairly targeting the lower income bracket whose "only joy" is a beer and cig after work. At least that's what happens here, and you just get another left-winger elected.

Maybe burgers and soda would be a good idea though, as the US is a well-known cultivator of ham planets. But then you're into the territory of annoying big pharma and hospitals by making people healthier.

Curious how much it would earn though, 1 or 2% of all the junk food sales nationwide

Not a fan. If something's legal why should people be targeted with what I would call "morality" taxes?

I guess an argument could be made for taxing items because the people who use them cost more for health care but then you're opening up a huge ass can of worms for all the unhealthy shit people put into their bodies.

I.E., you're going to tax a 6 pack of beer heavily because "drinking is bad" but no taxes on 6 fkn big gulps cups of mountain dew a day?

I don't think either should be targeted for taxes but I think most people would agree when not used in moderation they're both not great for your health.

What do you think of "sin" taxes? Does your opinion change if we call them "morality taxes instead? :)

I am against them too. The reason that I asked was because my wife's family is from Illinois, and they are prevalent there. And because of that I tend to associate them with democrats. To my FIL who votes democrat, they are a no brainer. But at the same time he is against taxes on the lower class, which is who they hit the hardest. I just got to wondering lately if this is something a lot of left leaning voters like, or if it's more unique to Illinois.

They may be higher in Illinois but they're prevalent everywhere in this country.

I associate them more with Republicans because there are so many Christians who want to inflict their own morality upon others even (especially?) if they have to punish them into it. And Republicans who claim to be Christians are a huge part of the "sin" taxes.

I say that because there are (or used to be) so many dry counties in the "bible belt" of the midwest. Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas. And I'm pretty damn sure all those places are filled with Trumpers.

In real life it's probably nonpartisan.

All taxes applied equally (sales taxes, sin taxes, etc) hit the people with the least income the hardest.

I think it's just the States who try to increase revenue. Just look at all the legal gambling out there now. It has to be destroying people. Same with new marijuanna laws. It's a way to get more taxes on those that don't own any property. I don't think it's Republican Christians doing all this on their own.
