Quote from: Smit on April 08, 2025, 10:20 AMNot a fan. If something's legal why should people be targeted with what I would call "morality" taxes?

I guess an argument could be made for taxing items because the people who use them cost more for health care but then you're opening up a huge ass can of worms for all the unhealthy shit people put into their bodies.

I.E., you're going to tax a 6 pack of beer heavily because "drinking is bad" but no taxes on 6 fkn big gulps cups of mountain dew a day?

I don't think either should be targeted for taxes but I think most people would agree when not used in moderation they're both not great for your health.

What do you think of "sin" taxes? Does your opinion change if we call them "morality taxes instead? :)

I'd like to understand it better, I really would. sitting here in my obtusiveness, i guess.
To properly understand, you must 1) Get a frontal lobotomy, 2) You take ALL the common sense you have... and throw it out the window. And 3) You absolutely and totally must surrender what is left of your mind to the thought police.

Then and only then can you start to beging to understand them.

Oh, one other thing... you should probably dye your hair some beautiful shade of puce or fuscia. It helps too.

We certainly do appreciate the candor, accuracy, and introspection of your above self assessment, Nutboy, but no need to be so hard on yourself.

Reviving an old thread here
I received an email from Sandvik this morning concerning tariffs
This stuck out.

Quotethese countries and delivered into the United States. These surcharges will take effect as of August 18 and will be applied as a percentage of the net price on affected products.
Surcharges will be adjusted or removed, from time to time, in response to and reflect changes in tariff policies or if production is relocated to regions not subject to these tariffs. The addition of the tariff cost to our product prices is included in our terms and conditions of sale. You will be able to see the surcharges when logged into our web shop or in your order confirmation.
To further reduce exposure to our shared customers and partners, Sandvik Coromant has transitioned 260 items to a USA facility, along with the removal of the tariff surcharge

I do not know what these 260 items are and in the big picture they are a tiny percentage of Sandvik's sales to the US,
but it is a start.

He's probably still waiting for PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) to hook his power up.

or

he moved into a fire zone and electricity is against the law  ::)

When the gov went after tobacco companies, Phillip Morris got smart and started buying up/investing in food production. IE, more highly addictive, highly processed crap that makes people sick. The only difference is people don't want to admit food is addictive so no meaningful regulation happens on food producers.

ah, interesting. I was wondering what became of the PM ticker.
Altria stayed the coarse with tobacco and such products.

There's a company making unhealthy food even more appealing to the senses (more vivid colors, crunchier, cranking up the flavors to well beyond "enhanced") in order to bypass the GLP-1's 'benefits'. i.e. making already addictive food, even moreso.

Guess we're going to have to take responsibility for our own food intake now.
