Quote from: SuperHoneyBadger on April 16, 2025, 10:29 AMI mean, people do that off of a bicycle? That's wild.

When I was a kid, we were making ramps with plywood and cinder blocks on a paved road and jumping our bikes.
No helmet, no pads, just pure fun.
Sure we got hurt sometimes, but we got up, looked at the giant strawberry the pavement just gave us and did it again.

I'm down with going outside to play and taking risks - don't get me wrong there isn't enough of that after age 5. I'm going to say that inviting a head injury isn't worth looking like a badass in any scenario. OK one: unlimited access to the Playboy Mansion "if you make that jump, broski"

We have a couple of Gen Z kids working here. They have the attention span of a gnat and I don't think it's possible for them to look away from their phone screen for more than 15 minutes at a time.
My kids... seriously cannot put their phones down. I thought I was bad.

The ONLY time I wore a helmet was at the skate park (Pipeline in Upland, Ca.) and "sometimes" when riding vert if I was going for air over 4'. For me, big air was ~7-8'. Never hit 9' AFAIK. Just too fuckin chicken to go big like that.

Couple of guys I rode with warmed up at 9. 8-O

I felt SO inadequate. I mostly rode flatland and NEVER wore a helmet. I still don't.

Hey, I respect the skill and your guys' choices, I'm not going to advocate legislation or anything... For my money though, a nasty bump on the head is the difference between a career as an operator, or a programmer!

I spend a lot of time on computers. Tinkering with things on a PC is kind of a hobby and has been since the early 90's. It's probably just as bad being planted on a phone, but I'm usually working on something productive while also peeking in here occasionally.

I hardly spend any time on my phone. I charge the thing twice a week and that's because I use it to listen to podcasts during my commute.  If I go out with people, I don't bother to take my phone out of my pocket. I've always felt like it's rude to sit there on your phone while people are trying to have a conversation with you.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

For the badasses in here, please continue with your no protective gear thing. Maybe make it a family-wide policy.

Thank you.

I'm not sure bicycle helmets were available when I was a kid. Just like seatbelts.

I'm rooted in the camp that a desktop computer/laptop is a creation/consumption device, and a phone purely a consumption device. I'm sure your tinkering has led you to avenues of problem solving, understanding and execution, as mine has. The rise of phones and tablets as someone's only computing device, to me, says they aren't interesting in building or making anything - physical or digital. No person is going to be programming all day on a tablet unless the circumstances are dire.

I'd rather get a brain injury than wear one of those stupid looking helmets. My entire life I've never known anyone hitting their head riding their bike.
