Quote from: CNCAppsJames on April 17, 2025, 09:52 AMBottom line, the tariff imbalance is not equitable for us. It needs to be.

That video I posted the other day (the one nobody liked because it has Trump, and fact check in the title) goes into some of the misconceptions we have about trade and tariff imbalances and how they work. It's not going to be a mind changer I'm sure, but at least it gave me a better understanding that it's not as simple as it sounds and how some of what we're hearing may be misleading.

China probably needs to be its own conversation.

Quote from: CNCAppsJames on April 17, 2025, 09:52 AMChina was pretty much thew only country making a large portion of the PPD in the world. They withheld from us... because they could.

This is the one great argument that I've seen, but it only applies to certain goods. You're not going to apply this same thinking to tennis shoes or Levis. That's why I keep wondering what the end game is here and is the cost going to be worth it in the end.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Who cares if China gets a little extra tariff coin, their labor is 10 times cheaper.

I'm open to understanding trade better or from a different perspective. One thing I have observed for a great many decades, regarding trade, trade imbalances, treaties, etc... follow the money. Once you follow the money, you understand why one individual's perspective/analysis of the situation may be this, and another's may be that. I have a bias (shocker I know). My bias is I am loathe to be beholden to another nation for any reason. Be they "allies", "trade partners", or whatever, I'm just not down for it. There are cases where they are unavoidable (such as titanium, rare earth metals, etc...) where we need something that is naturally unavailable within our geographic borders, in those cases, we will certainly have an inbalance. I just know we cannot create a one size fits all policy, likewise, we cannot let other nations abuse us. Fuck that.

China probably does need to be a separate discussion for an astronomical number of reasons. Those IP thieving, everything in their country belongs to their military and/or government, genocidal, communist, environmental savage pieces of shit... yeah. let's have that conversation too. Fuckin commies!

There's maybe 4 or 5 companies making jeans in the USA again. At one time, I think it was only 1 or 2. Fuckin' Levi Strauss... I hope they go out of business. They almost single handedly destroyed an iconic piece of US clothing... jeans. They don't deserve to live. Fortunately companies like Origin in Maine have brought back denim production from the growing of the cotton to end user sale... EVERYTHING is made in the USA. My 1st pair a few year ago when they were kind of a niche company... they cost me about $150. Prices are now down around $100 a pair. I think the goal is to get them down around $75. Mass production helps. I only wish they would make them in button fly. Origin is now manufacturing denim for other US based apparel companies. Levi Strauss approached Origin, Pete Roberts told them fuck off!

Origin now makes a bunch of stuff between their different plants.

I say that they would be a different discussion because they are really the only Country that you could say has any leverage over us?

What other Country is able to take advantage of us without us letting them?

Speaking of leverage, you're already seeing reports of businesses who rely on products from China preparing to go under.  Sure, you can say it's their own fault, but that doesn't keep their doors open.

I did not. What's wrong with our chicken? Steroids?

QuoteThe European Union and the United Kingdom have banned the importation of U.S. chicken due to the practice of washing chicken carcasses with chlorine to kill bacteria.
This ban is not because the chlorine wash itself is deemed dangerous, but rather because it may compensate for poor hygiene practices elsewhere in the supply chain.
The EU believes that relying on chlorine washing could lead to poorer hygiene standards overall and prefers the "farm to fork" approach, which focuses on improving hygiene standards throughout the entire process.

The first place we stayed probably isn't a fair comparison.  Almost all the food came from local farmers and the food available was seasonal.

After we left that area the food was still better than what we get here, and it's by a long shot.  The food in Rome was better and it's what I would consider a tourist trap.
