Found this article interesting. I'm not really in to taking any kind of supplements but did just start taking vitamin D recently.  I don't get out in the sun much (melanoma) and I don't get nearly enough vitamin D in my diet.

I've always been surprised at how many people trust and rely on supplements, as regulation is rather limited. And how many people take this stuff thinking it's safe without the proper research or consulting a physician?

Rates of liver injuries rise in the U.S. as supplements grow in popularity

"Whereas dietary supplements typically contain nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids from a range of sources such as fish oil, herbal supplements are a subset of dietary supplements composed of plant-based ingredients.

Liver damage linked to supplements is rare. How rare is unclear.

What is known is why cases are on the rise: More Americans are taking supplements. As many as 3 in 4 adults 18 and older take them, according to a 2024 survey by the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a trade group representing the dietary supplement and functional food industry. Almost 4 in 5 users said they prefer supplements to prescription or over-the-counter medications."

QuoteEven though Grafton stopped the turmeric pills the day he started the turmeric drink, Halegoua-De Marzio said, turmeric overload most likely caused his liver injury. Not only was the drink ultra-concentrated; the pills contained 2,250 mg of curcumin, a substance that comes from the root of the turmeric plant. The pills also include black pepper extract, which Halegoua-De Marzio warned increases absorption twentyfold.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

This is 100% caused by social media. Influencers need to stay current so they jump on what ever the current trend is. A couple years ago it was turmeric. Specifically turmeric and black pepper together. The pepper makes the turmeric like 1000% more bioavailable. So the daily 1/4 teaspoon recommendation is way too much if you add pepper. The result is liver damage. Influencers rushed to get the clicks but didn't fully research it.

I take vitamin D and iron drops daily. I also use soy milk that has B and other vitamins added.

Reality...a well balanced diet gets you everything your body needs.

The "American" diet, by & large is woefully structured.

I asked my Neurologist about the Tumeric that had been suggested to me...he stated studies simply don't show the results and that supplements can make any claims that they like as there are no controls...

I have been taking the Tumeric for about 6 weeks, it has done absolutely nothing for my arthritis pain.

Beyond that I take a multi-vitamin and for any kind of supplement, that is it.

I will be dropping the Tumeric...

It just seems to me putting anything in wildly increasing amounts into your body, isn't good for you.

Wife's pain and inflammation are noticably better the day after restarting tumeric. From a not wanting to move out of a chair all day to up and doing shopping and crafts.

But we are using the carnivore variant😆

While I am happy for her, I think you can chalk it up to the "placebo effect"

Most things say it takes a month to build up and get any results.

If it is working for her, however it's working

I just don't get you young fellas and your social media influencers.  :hrhr:

Eat a well balanced diet and you'll be alright. Personally I take a multivitamin and that's it. I believe most supplements are pissed away because your body just doesn't need them.

I don't believe in "cleanses" either.

Yeah, my thought as well. Could be a placebo or just a normal up/down variation of all the stuff she's got going.
BTW, she's been getting good scan results this week💪💪

There is a MASSIVE amount of variation regarding supplements - different manufacturers and different ingredients. Lots are just chalked dust and oil as binders....aka, synthesised shit.
It's the real stuff that's needed. Fresh garlic, fresh ginger etc, cut it up, cook/eat it.
Popping a pill is not the answer, IMHO.
And we really do need, at least 10 minutes of sunshine a day....

I like to do a once a month Taco Bell cleanse.

Couple of beefy 5 layer burritos really clean ya out. :fun:

I definitely believe in an old school cleanse with tacos. Especially with a healthy portion of habanero salsa to go on top.

Very....satisfying! :)

Pho, with lots of sriracha or chili oil does the trick for me.

I've been taking turmeric for at least 15 years. Right now with my diabetes I'm combining it with three other suppliants. The combo allows me to remove excess amounts of sugar though urination.
