As thought exercise, where do you draw the line? If a cabal of Big pharma/Insurance/political elites mandate you need to take their experimental vaccines do you comply. If they deem the environmental cost of you having a single family dwelling is too high and use eminent domain to take it from you, "for the good of the planet", do you comply? Those sound like extreme hypotheticals, yet the stuff they are doing today seemed extreme 20 years ago. When is it too much?

IMO, with the advancing AI/Robotics we have about 20-ish years left until we are at a Ready Player One type of society. The majority of people will live in poverty with subsidized housing and UBI. Your purpose will be to consume the junk food, junk medicine, social media, etc. but never enough to build any meaningful wealth and freedom. Right now we are at a turning point. There are a lot of us that could probably just ride out our years and most likely not have see/live in this dystopian future. The problem is, our kids and grandkids will.

I tried to adopt my oldest son. It was going to cost $15k in 1994 dollars. That was damn near a year's salary for me back then.

ALL because of fucking lawyers! There was going to be nothing to it, it wasn't going to be contested. I married his mom, dad wasn't in the picture since 1988 and wasn't going to be. Just filing some paperwork and that was it.

So, I never adopted him. By the time I could afford the absurd legal fees, it was a moot point, and he wasn't going to change his last name at that point in his life.

I have a similar situation. I met my oldest daughter when she was two. I was going to adopt her and even went to the lawyer but I couldn't afford it at the time. Her mom and I split up before I could. She'll  be 50 in August and I'm still her dad. And I'm grandpa to her kids. I'm on a plane right now waiting to take off, heading to Seattle to see my 11 year old granddaughter test for her black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
