The police get their orders from the Mayor. I wouldn't be so quick to place the blame on the police.
Unless it's the Seattle police chief who's calling for resistance against ICE.
That fucker needs to be fired a.s.a.p. along with Chicago's mayor.

NYC mayoral candidate found out real quick that blocking ICE from doing their job gets you cuffed and stuffed. No warrant needed like he claimed over and over while getting dragged out of the  courthouse.

The "mechanics" of how cities work with "law enforcement" has something to do with who answers to whom.
The "Police Chief" answers to the mayor. Not to the people, not to the rank and file, to. the. mayor. In "cities" that have Police Departments, they are the 1st line of defense in a large scale situation. Again, the "police" answer to the mayor.

The "Sheriff" Department OTOH constitutionally speaking answer to the people. "The Sheriff" is an elected position. It is in the best interest of "The Sheriff" to have a cohesive relationship with the mayor in the largest cities that fall within the borders of the county. Villanueva was an INFINITELY better Sheriff than that eunuch Luna. But, he had a contentious relationship with the LA Board of Stupidvisors, so they along with the mayor were against him and the Voters of Los Angeles County are absolutely fucking morons, so he got voted out. The voters there are mouth breathing, crayon eating, window licking, short bus riding, helmet and face mask wearing morons. Luna is a fucking pussy. Straight up, balls in Mayor Bass's purse pussy. Fuck that turd... Fuckin' piece of shit.

So, anyway, the Mayor or The Police Chief (in LA I'm not positive) has to call The Sheriff Delartment in for "situations" since the city is not in the jurisdiction of the Sheriff Delartment.

It's a little more comicated than that, but that's the nuts and bolts of it.

The LA Mayor likes the rioters. She has no problem with them therefore she allows streets to be comandeered and the city to be wrecked.

CHP (California Highway Patrol) has jurisdiction over highways and generally speaking they don't play. It may take them some time to get there, once they are there, they mean business.

I assume you're talking about the Mayor of Seattle?

He's made national headlines?

I don't care for Harrell, but he's 100 times better than the person he ran against would have been, and he's better than the last Mayor who was responsible for Chaz/Chop.

The Seattle Mayor position is regarded locally as the last stop in a persons political career. No matter how left the Mayor is, they still find reasons that they aren't left enough.

No, the police chief. I'm pretty sure it's Seattle's police chief.

Ahh yea, He's only been in there for a few months.  I don't know much about him.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to be the Chief of Police in Seattle. Or just a LEO period.

When I first stared working at this shop 30 years ago, it was typical for me to see at least 3 Seattle police on the way to work driving through the City every morning.  Now, I don't see one for weeks, sometimes months.

The alarm went off in the shop at 1:00am one morning and the owner came down to check it out. He called SPD to see if he could get someone down here. It took them 3 hours to show up and that was after the shop owner told them he was armed and going in the shop whether they showed or not.

Nobody wants to work for the SPD.

I can't blame them. Especially in cities where the Mayors and Governors support the defunding of police.

When the defund b/s was going on, there were ads popping up from other Cities saying they'll take anyone from the SPD who wants to work somewhere that they would be appreciated. Quite a few of the officers left for greener pastures, and they haven't been able to fill the staffing shortage since. I think they're at the lowest staffing level in 30 years right now. It's too difficult to get a job with the SPD, and then once you're in, you're shit on by the public. Who would want to "protect and serve" a community that hates you?

I would too when all they let you use is a frickin paintball gun!
Rubber bullets aren't soft but they're effective in most situations.
Flamethrowers would be more effective at crowd dispersion IMO.   ;D

I always thought sheriff = police ie the same,
So Police is effectively Fed ie Gov/same as army - taking instructions direct and only from the Gov?

It's a little different here; the police report to the city manager.

We had an incident a few years ago where the mayor at that time who tried to throw his weight around at a community clean up event. It was for a specific area and the mayor tried to bring stuff in from outside that area and then tried to jump in front of everyone else. He called the city manager to complain about the cop, who got in all on his body camara. The mayor was smoking a big fat cigar which created a really bad look for him as he was bitching about the cop doing his job. He didn't get re-elected. It was ironic because he beat the mayor before him who was corrupt.

They are different and they answer to different people.

One fo the things that got Villanueva in hot water with the Lost Angeles Board of Stupidvisors was the issuance of Concealed Carry Permits. Los Angeles County had a LONGSTANDING TRADITION that they just didn't issue them. The Sherrif just flat out refused even though it was within his power to issue. When the SCOTUS case from New York came down and basically said that was unconstitutional ro deny issuing permits Villanueva began issuing permits. THe Board of Stupidvisors had a hissy fit. That and the whole COVID, Mask, tyranny bullshit, he just wasn't having it. Then when they tried to tell him what to do, he threw the California State Constitution in their face, and they REALLY didn't like that so then they conspired to oust him and the exceptionally fine people of Lost Angeles Country saw fit to follow the Board of Stupidvisors.

Now LA County has a patsy in the Sherrif's Office that takes his orders from from Mayor bAss and the Board of Stupidvisors.
