Yes, there is some of that. In the movie, it's discovered that Superman's parents actually encouraged him to actually conquer the planet. This causes backlash against him for being an alien. But, I thought, it was actually relevant to the plot.
Admittedly, this movie is a departure from the classic Superman movie. It has sort of a punk rock feel to it. For instance, at one point his cousin Supergirl shows up, still wasted from partying on other planets.

I can see why some might not like it, but I enjoyed it.
