Quote from: Jeff on August 06, 2025, 11:47 AMYeah, if you don't ask, you won't get. My problem is that I always feel guilty about asking for a raise. It's a small job shop and I've known the owners since the late 80's. He's good people, just a little out of touch with how much someone in my position should have been making.

Very similar situation here. I was working in this shop before the current owner was old enough to work. When his Dad was running the shop, he was completely out of touch with trade progression, so when people would demand raises his response would typically be, are you doing anything extra?   I don't know that he ever thought about cost of living raises. Since the current owner was brought up working for his Dad, he inherited that same attitude.

This is a pretty small shop as well. I think we have about 18 employees and 5 of them are office and shipping jobs.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Quote from: YoDoug on August 06, 2025, 11:18 AMHere is the truth about wealth and income gap. GDP grows yoy at a pretty consistent rate. For the top .x% to grow their wealth at exponential rates, it has to come from somewhere. If the "pie" is not growing at the same rate as the top earners, it coming from someone else's portion of the pie. the whole "a billionaire is not responsible for your troubles" FB memes like to ignore that fact. In the next decade we will see a set of people with net worth in $1T range and we will still see the $15 minimum wage argument or something ridiculously low compared to living costs. In a few decades the middle class will be gone. UBI will be normal for most people. Likewise the income gap will keep changing from a curve to a more hockey stick graph as the gap will be too far to reach by current wealth creation principals.

my dad grew up in a home with no indoor plumbing and no electricity. He farmed with horses in his youth. I have an air-conditioned home and vehicle, that I can control in large part, with a hand held phone. yes, if you are comparing lifestyles of the rich and famous with my life, it is a sorry state of affairs, but to say that life hasn't improved for this generation in decades, it's just not true.

wages have improved buy we spend these wages on things our parents would have never considered possible. Look back on your own parent's generation. what do you have that they don't have. I bet it's significant.

Statistics don't back up your sentiment. Wages, income/wealth gap, and cost of living has changed quite a bit over the last 50 years. Just because we have cell phones now doesn't make it even.

If my Old man had the controls??

The front  door would slam shut. with a "We're you born in a Fucking Barn"?

The door would automatically open in your bedroom everytime a girl walked in.

The gas tank would always show empty.

At 10 P.M. every night Mom would Text "Where are you"?

you are oversimplifying my argument to say "we have cell phones now."

I guess I could make an entire list, or try to, to show what we have now, that our parents didn't have.

this argument might be pointless. it is based on a position of attitude. or should I say, gratitude. I am grateful for everything I have, and the sacrifice my parents made for me to be able to have it.

at the same time, if I was so inclined I could be bitter at people who have more, and want what they have, but what does that do for us? (not calling you bitter, just highlighting 2 polar positions)

Either way, it's pretty basic to see how much GDP has grown versus income and wealth gap. The bottom line is the wealthy are keeping a higher and higher percentage of GDP growth and lowest incomes are getting a smaller percentage. The problem is society doesn't work when that gap grows too big. If this income gap as a percentage of GDP continues along the same trend, Long after you have lived out your comfortable retirement while defending billionaires greed, your grandchildren will finish their lives in poverty.

I am done defending capitalist greed. Likewise I will call out the utter failure of socialist economies. We need to stop revering greed and call it out for what it is. Elon Musk wants a $50B Tesla pay package but the average Tesla employee wage cannot afford a house within an hour or more drive of Tesla. So often I see the "I never got a job from a poor guy" line thrown out. While that may be true, it doesn't excuse holding down wages below inflation for decades. Also, the whole "Labor is a free market, if you don't like go work somewhere else" is BS as well. The billionaires have bought and paid for all the laws and regs they need to keep wages where they want them.

Brian

An acquaintance on LinkedIn recently mentioned this book:

https://www.ucpress.edu/books/the-mechanic-and-the-luddite/paper

It just arrived a couple of days ago and I'm starting to work my way thru it. I mention this as it seems to (tangentially?) address some of the things that YoDoug mentions in his post above (#68).

I'm only about 4 chapters into it, but it's been interesting so far. Of course, "Silicon Valley" (we live in San Jose) features prominently in Chapter 3 ("Innovation"). I had a good laugh when Theranos was mentioned, as I had done a small amount of work for them (always got paid-no issues). Silicon Valley Bank comes up as well-a current customer used to bank with them. Again-no harm came of it but it's funny to read about stuff that has happened locally. A number of our customers are venture-funded.

I'll report back when I'm finished with it....

Quote from: mowens on August 06, 2025, 11:25 AMI pay for some of it. That's why, even though I got a raise, my take home pay didn''t changed much this time.

I've gotten a raise each of the 16 years I've been here. Plus my job code changed which bumped me up considerably. My pay has almost doubled in that time.

I currently pay about $400 a month for medical and I put $250 every two weeks into an HSA. I have a $6000 deductible and the company contributes a lump sum into the HSA every year when the insurance starts over.

Why are you not on Medicare and a supplement drawing your social security and still working full time?
