Quote from: neurosis on August 11, 2025, 12:43 PMIsn't Del a stoner?  Are we throwing stones at stoners now?

Not allowing someone entry because they said that they smoked pot once in Germany? Or in States where it's legal in the US

It sure doesn't feel like the USA. They're going through US citizens phones, asking for passwords to social media, etc, and if you refuse, they can lock you up/detain you. You support that?
1) Del belongs here. Citizenship offers certain benefits.
2) Nope not throwing stones at stoners... :P just people that enter foreign countries and don't know the rules.
3)" They're going through US citizens phones..." I'm not about to listen to some turd posting rage-bait. In order to legally gain access to a "US Citizen" device would require a search warrant without "exigent circumstances".

When I leave my home country, I do not take my phone with me. I have a burner for that, and I get a SIM. Why? To steer clear of any possible import/export rules I may not be aware of. I also pull the SSD from my laptop that I keep my ITAR work on. Out of abundance of caution. Obviously the average tourist does not have to be concerned with such things, caution should be the word when traveling abroad. That goes for us going there, or them coming here.

Rule #1 for entering a foreign country, KNOW THE RULES!

Quote from: YoDoug on August 11, 2025, 01:06 PMHere's the thing, why all of the sudden is there this rash of phone inspections?

I'm sure that if you spend some time thinking about it, you could come up with some reasons?

Quote from: YoDoug on August 11, 2025, 01:06 PMEven more on that point, you think in 8 months of Admin change they were able to start this massive monitoring and flagging op, or was it already there under previous admins?

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, not the TSA, are responsible for these searches when entering the Country. The TSA doesn't have the authority. And Yes, it's entirely possible. It's as simple as an internal policy change and adding more CBP. Haven't they been adding more border patrol agents and changing policy on the Southern border?  :headscratch:  BTW, Nobody said a massive, or rash increase although the searches did double during Trumps first term, so? And who knows how they decide who to search? Profiling? The point is that more people are reporting random, indiscriminate searches. If the number of searches isn't increasing, are they being more critical of the information they are finding? Has treatment been worse? I know you're not going to believe anyone who says something negative about current policy because they obviously have TDS. I do believe them, because I can see what's going on in the Country right now. You have no rights here!

BTW, just an opinion, not allowing a tourist in the Country because they admitted to smoking pot at some time in their life, especially when it was legal where they admitted to doing it, is nuts. Tourists can legally purchase, and consume, marijuana in US States that it's legal, and it's legal in Germany. It certainly isn't illegal to have a photo of paraphanalia. So what exactly did this kid do? We don't like his face, so fuck-em? It would be even dumber to keep him out for disagreeing with the current admins political beliefs. Either way, Authoritarian much?

How is tourism doing in the US currently?

"International tourism in the United States is experiencing a significant decline in 2025. The U.S. is projected to lose $12.5 billion in international visitor spending this year, with spending expected to fall to just under $169 billion from $181 billion in 2024"

I wonder why that is?

From what I've read, this is becoming more common right now. I would have never considered it being necessary until now.

Not as well as past years.

Easy. #OrangeManBad

My opinion FWIW; YouRoPeeUnz are pissed that we aren't standing for their NATO bullshit anymore.
We are forcing them to pay their contractually obligated amount FOR THEIR OWN DEFENSE... and they are PISSED!

That could be part of it?

The people I've talked to are worried about the complications of getting in, and more importantly, out of the Country.

I'm sure you know why Canadian tourists are down. Washington State is seeing a sharp decline in Canadian tourism, and Canadians have made it clear that it's due to political tension.

Yes, #orangemanbad  <---- that's not the way they put it.

Getting ready to fire one up. Don't throw me out Mr Trump.

They still partake of our border medical facilities. I was in Bellingham some months back and I swear 9 out of 10 people in front of me at the hotel check-in had Canadian Passports and were wearing the tell tale cancer headware. The majority of cars in the parking lot had Canadian plates.

I look at the Canadians pissed about our politics the same way I look at People's Republik of Kommieforniastan .gov critters boycotting states they don't like. #CopeAndSeetheHarder

When I was in Minot ND a few years ago over Thanksgiving, there were busloads of Canadians coming down for the Black Friday sales. The hotel I was staying at was connected to a mall. There were shopping carts in the hallways; it was pretty funny because it's not like there were really high end stores either. Those wild and crazy Canadians. I tell ya.

However you want to look at it, it's had a devastating effect on some of the border Cities that typically see a lot of Canadian tourists.

"Border crossings from British Columbia have dropped sharply, with vehicle entries falling by 35% in May 2025 compared to the previous year, and a continued 29% decline observed in July.

The decline has severely impacted border communities like Whatcom County, Blaine, and Bellingham, where businesses reliant on Canadian shoppers report substantial profit losses."

Some of those smaller tourist cities rely on that income.

What's the solution?

Give in to petulant commies?

Let's just let the coasties in the People's Republik of Kommieforniastan dictate how the rest of the US handles everything then everyone will be happy right?

Were our only two choices to regularly demean an entire Country that is supposed to be our ally, or cave to the commies?

That's going to make it tough.  :D

Considering some SERIOUS square mileage in Canada is SERIOUS about secession... I mean am I really that far off?

We're siblings having a tiff. Yeah, the little brother is gonna draw some blood, from us, but when we both realize it's in both of our best interests in a few months or a year to put this to rest things will be back to normal.
