Quote from: YoDoug on August 14, 2025, 08:06 AMA few weeks ago I driving in my 400hp 25psi boosted Mazdaspeed. Pulled up next to guy in an early 70's cutlass. Smoked him with the AC on, and I still get 25MPG on the highway.

I was googling and saw that even with a 442 the cutlass had about 375 horsepower. When new mine had 435 hp. That's another thing I like. When I need to pass someone, I can pass them.

I miss read this. LOL
We were talking about old cars and hot rod projects and I read this as

Even Vegas can be cool..... and I was thinking
"No!!, No!! Vegas cannot be cool!!,they are a shit stain on the American auto industry that can never be erased."

Speaking of Vegas, a crazy friend of mine once shoehorned a 454 in to a Vega to run 1/4 mile races.
First time he got on it the frame twisted so bad the car was not drivable.
Only 3 wheels touched the ground and it took a cutting torch to get the engine out of the car.

The thing with old Muscle cars, they were heavy and had poor gearing. 3 speed auto or 4 speed manual don't compare well to modern 6+ speed transmissions. Keep a small turbo engine in the HP range with more gears plus the weight advantage of smaller engine/car/etc. and it gets pretty hard to beat with an old carbureted NA car.

My first car was a 65 Barracuda that we picked up out of a junkyard for $200 in 1985. It took some work to get it going, but it was a good first car for a poor boy.

I didn't know it at the time, I found out later; there was a guy that lived about a 1/2 mile from me that had a 65 barracuda in his garage. He saw me driving down the road and flagged me down. This thing had a 440 Magnum with a 6pack on it. The engine was so big the battery was in the trunk of the car. I don't know if you could get them like that or if it was a custom build, but as a 16-year-old kid, I couldn't believe my eyes. I think mine had a gutless 273 in it.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

They also looked and sounded a hell of a lot cooler than anything we have today.

My first car in High school was a 72 Chevelle. Sometimes I miss that car. However, I like all the luxuries of modern cars, AC, Cruise, traction control, etc. Also, I have tuned carbs, set points, recurved a dist, in an old car and I have computer tuned a boosted DI modern car. I much more prefer the modern system for tunability, drivability, and reliability.

Ooo, I had a Pinto for aawhile and I'll tell you, that doesn't leave anywhere near the emotional scars that my parents 78 AMC Pacer left...god I shudder whenever I see a picture of one..

My mom had a '68 Dodge Coronet with a 383....I WANTED that car....then she traded it on the "newer" Pacer   :sniff:
