It was a thread about Washington State passing a law (which was then struck down by the courts) requiring Catholic priests to report child abuse, sexual or otherwise, learned about during confession.

And sorry, I don't mean to come out swinging at you. It's not your fault. I've seen a LOT of bigot fueled hate over the last few days.

Mental abuse can be worse and have longer lasting effects than physical abuse. Take that for what it's worth. 

I didn't really take that as coming out swinging,  I've just seen you reference "the Catholic thread" whenever pedos and the treatment they deserve gets brought up.

I think everyone in here goes hard against pedos..  maybe some go harder than others, but nobody here thinks we should go easy on 'em, not even the three musketqueers.  If there was a single thing that would unite all of us, it would be that.

Why is it allowed to keep happening? FANTASTIC question.  I was raised Catholic, and went to Catholic School from 4th grade to the middle of 7th grade. I did my confirmation at my mother's behest. I caused problems in my confirmation classes because I was asking questions the teacher was nether equipped nor able to answer The blind faith people have in their institutions is both troubling and seriously  problematic. 

My opinion... doesn't really carry any real weight, but I'll opine nonetheless. In the  Catholic faith (and many others for that matter) their leaders are seen as more than a man as are the clergy. When you see humans as more than humans, you begin to think they can do no wrong. When you think they can do no wrong, you don't question what they do. When you do not question what they do... the bad apples will do bad and often with impunity. It all stems from the lack of understanding of human nature. You're always going to have people that will do good no matter what, and the inverse is true, there are people that will do bad no matter what, then you have the rest of that will do some bad and some good. 

I don't think people are "scum" because they are non-believers. Few really think that. You have your outliers like Westboro Baptist but they are a vocal miniscule minority... that just happens to get a lot of press. 

You see things as most non-believers do... you think it's about "Religion". It's not. "Religion" was created by man and suffers because of it.

If in your non-religious beliefs , you attack those that do.....Yes , it's worse.

We are both doing it.

Why do we need to "let that sink in"?

Clearly society is OK with clergy, Hollywood, sports coaches, etc... diddling kids. Thankfully at least society drew the line at Scoutmasters though.

My old Scout Troop instituted "Two Deep Leadership" in the 1970's. Long before it was instituted at the national level.

When society allows degenerate behavior to be the norm, we can't be shocked when more degenerate behavior ensues. Degenerates will continue to push the envelope until they receive pushback then they'll back off just enough. Then they'll push the envelope further, until finally there is no such thing as deviant behavior.

That time WILL come. Maybe not in our lifetime, but rest assured it will come.
