You're right, give those felons and drug dealers back their weapons so they can murder more people.
What was I thinking?

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"

I can see the security argument being made in a place with rampant crime or violence. And the phrasing is that the right to bear arms is fundamental to not only freeing a state, but maintaining that freedom.

What does the 'well regulated' clause mean in 2025, how it is applied? I'm genuinely curious as I don't see it quoted nearly as often as the last part, but it would seem to be important. Is the Militia in need of regulating, or does it DO the regulating?

You used to see the "well regulated" part a fair bit, but as it's meaning has been thoroughly vetted (at least by those daring to view such fringe documents as dare I say a 1st Edition Webster's Dictionary), that argument has fallen by the way side.

So, "regulated" BITD meant what "trained" means today. Well trained if we were to use modern language. The "militia" was EVERY able bodied individual.

Regulated in the Constitution DOES NOT mean "regulations applied". Only illiterates think/believe that. But when people apply today's language to the language from 250 years ago, things can get confusing, which is why the Fringe reference materials like dictionaries need to come out so we can understand what was actually meant by the text.

Another good word that has changed meaning over the years though some still use it... I think out of spite, but I digress... "purchase". At one time, is meant to have a firm grim on something.

Language is important. THe left knows just how important it is and they torture it like nobody's business.

Thanks for that, I appreciate the clarification.

I have always said "words matter", and that has as many meanings as you'd care to find within it. Seeing the classwork roughly 10 years ago when my wife was doing her Linguistics degree was eye opening. I helpedwrote her a SOCI1001 paper and got a perfect score (with a gold star) without ever knowing anything about the class just based on the feelies that they were looking for, and the TA ate it up: "Organizing and acting, acting and organizing, representation, actionable protest for community involvement, calls to action".

Now the dumbfuck Chicago Mayor is blaming the gun violence on Red states.

"These firearms come from RED STATES! They are coming from Indiana, Mississippi, Louisiana. That is the harsh reality, whether Republicans like it or NOT."
"Shootings will be a problem as long as red states have a firearm problem."

What a complete waste of oxygen this man is.

If I were to go to DC and conceal carry a firearm... even though I bear a CCW Permit (juat happens to be frommthe free state of Utah), I would be "illegally carrying".

That's a LOW bar for arrest.
