Bloody hell Tom. Glad you're made from the right stuff, but to reiterate what JP said the other day, look at hanging up your mouse.
Or at least, dropping down to 3 days.
Life is short bud.

FFS Tom.
Go have a word with yourself man!!!!
Can you go self employed working from home - would it be better tax for you as you can claim other things too (home office, % of electric etc)?

That is against the law in Cali.
I did have a contracting business for 20 years, but CA AB5 outlawed contracting in 2019.
You have to become a formal Corporation, pay $800/year for the privilege of being a corporation
and do all the tax and corporate filings required of a corporation.
I did try that for a couple of years, but after the state taxes, state fees and accounting expenses I was making about $10/hour. Also my employer's lawyers disapproved of my corporation doing work for them while I was still an employee.
CrazyMillman does all this, but he is the only person I know who has been successful at it.

CLEARLY you have no idea what you speak of. That's OK. We'll educate you.

The People's Republik of Kommieforniastan will allow him no such luxury.

The kommies running that shithole figured out that people working as "contractors" couldn't effectively unionize therefore they would not receive their additional due tribute so they put an end to it. Now, there are people that skirt the kommies law but you REALLY are pushing your luck because The Demonkkkrats demand their tribute and they will not be denied. They WILL bring the full force of their abusive laws down on you without even a 2nd thought.

Generally speaking, politicians are evil. We all know that and have mostly come to terms with it. The Demonkkkrat Kommies running that shithole we call Kommieforniastan are so beyond the normal level of evil, they are maybe one step above a Mao, a Stalin, or a Ceausescu. The only thing the PRK isn't doing (yet) is putting breathing people to physical death.

And I'm being kind.

I suspect the Spanish taxman did way better than you did though.

A funny thing about CA AB5
It was an attempt to unionize gig workers and also had a blanket prohibition on contracting.
To show you how clueless the Cali government is
There are about 60 different languages the Cali court system has to accommodate.
The state of California does not keep an army of translators on the payroll.
They use contractors.
The day AB5 was signed, they effectively shut down every courthouse in the state.
It was necessary to call the legislature back into an emergency session  to amend AB5.
Translators, professional musicians and a host of other politically connected contractors were
granted exemptions from AB5... sadly, CNC Programmers are not politically connected.

Damn Tootin!!!!
Accountant did ok too, as quarterly accounts had to be submitted plus the end of the year final (so 4x quarters plus the final year end) and also a VAT return is also required to be submitted, every quarter (= another 4 submissions), even if you're not registered so it's all €0.00 values.
And all €€€€ payout.

G. You don't seem like the kinda guy who looks forward to retirement. Everyone is different about that. Me, I never think about my work days unless I'm having a nightmare. 😝

Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life.
Though I must admit, some days I love it a little less than others.

I tried retirement for 2.5 years.  Ended up going to work for another company. It was hard to sit around the house doing small projects during weekdays waiting for the kidos to get out of school and then do something fun.
