As for fusion? I have done the homework enough to know that it's not happening in our lifetimes. If ever. It's as grifty as it gets as far as business. The best theory I have heard is that fusion only works at the scale and location of a Sun. You need the cooling factor of near vaccuum, and the space for the reactions to do their work. Putt putt dropping in a few pellets into a laser cannon and using 400Mw to produce 4w (or whatever the NIF shto generated) is NOT electricity generation.

Helion energy has other things to say. Its all about the Anuetronic field reverse configuration fusion. The spooks have had fusion for year and its now just being rolled out through the "approved" corporations.

Remember when they have their fusion power plants delivering free and unlimited green energy, they will still charge us for it. Its not "Free" Energy, its "Fee" Energy....

There IS a lot going into them... progress has just been hampered by excessive bureaucracy in the past.

The #OrangeManBad DOE EO sometime in April IIRC streamlined the approval process.

This is my favourite version (save for Liquid Sodium Thorium fast breeders): I remember a Toshiba patent 10 or 15 years ago where they would drop in a ~30 foot long reactor in a hole. Then you have a shack on top to monitor it and hook up to. Instant rural power grid, fuelled for 20 years or so. Been awhile since I read it, but if I'm not mistaken it was the first SMR that made it to paper.

There is a new plant opening up near me, an hour or two away, they are decommissioning the old CANdU reactor, and opening up an SMR facility. The idea is build them there, truck them out to the sites - anywhere you can get to with 30 semis, you can build a reactor. I think they gave gov't support up here, hopefully they are successful.

I've got maybe a dozen or so customers working on various aspects of them from design through manufacture.

If you're a fan of machined stuff.... these things are just SO badass.
