I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I'm going to need a rear view to confirm that statement.

Quote from: marshal on May 27, 2022, 09:33 AMEvery faucet in my house has it's own individual shutoff.  I assumed that was standard.  There should be no reason to turn the water off to the entire building to replace any faucet parts.
yep every faucet and toilet but showers do not normally run a shutoff valve. make me think am doing a shower remodel and that could come in handy if i plumbed valve under the house.

Many newer shower valves do have shutoffs. One on each side for hot and cold. Typically only good for repairing or replacing the cartridge.

yes.  although it's a manufactured home so things are built differently than a house built on site.

Quote from: neurosis on May 27, 2022, 04:56 AM...I think that I chose the wrong trade.  I would take $600 to do that little of work.

You and me both. And your project that would net you $600 was MUCH easier than mine.

We've had a '07 Lexus RX350 for over 10 years. The car currently has 250K miles. Other than general maintenance, the only thing I've ever done to it was replace the rear wheel bearings at around 200K. Best car we've ever owned, no contest. The interior still looks like the day we bought it with 30K miles.

My son has had it in Kansas City for the last few years. He had a company truck at his last job so the Lexus was kind of a spare. He only put about 10K miles on it. He recently switched jobs and no longer has a company car. I told him to drive the Lexus as long as he wants. Save up some $$$, nice to not have a car payment, cheap to insure, etc. Well, the Lexus needed brakes. A local shop quoted him $900 to do the work. Then he had a pretty sweet signing bonus from his new job burning a hole in his pocket so he bought himself a 2018 Subaru WRX STI. Dumb kid.

He brought the old Lexus back home to Indiana a couple weeks ago and a buddy started harassing me about buying it for his soon to be 16 year old kid. I told him I needed to do an oil change and brake job before I'd sell it to anybody. Ended up putting all new rotors and brake pads on it myself, for about $375 in parts. Compared to the $900 quote he got, saved $525. I would do multiple 4 disc break jobs every day of the week if I could net $500/job. Few things on a car are easier than replacing a set of disc brakes. I don't know why more people don't DIY them.

So I check out the KBB website to get an idea of what I should sell it for. I'm thinking, 15 year old car, 250K miles, gotta be worth around $3000-$3500. I was shocked to find the value they listed was $6500-7000.

I know prices of used cars are crazy but, damn.

So I tell my buddy, give me $5K. Saves me listing it on FaceBook and dealing with all the weirdoes. He says, deal.

The next day I noticed a small puddle of fluid under it. At first I though it was just AC condensation. Nope, pink Toyota antifreeze. Only a few tablespoons worth, but not a good sign. After snooping around a bit, I decided it appears to be coming from the water pump. I google how to replace a water pump on a Toyota 2GR-FE motor. Let me just say, it didn't look like any fun.

I break the news to my buddy, who has always worked on his own cars, and told him, give me $4K. He says, let me check to see how much a shop will charge to fix it. Quotes range from $900 at the Lexus dealer to up to $1300 from an independent shop. My buddy, a legendary cheapskate and notorious haggler says, I'll give you $3K. I told him, fuck off.

So off to Amazon I go. Order a water pump, 2 idler pulleys, 1 tensioner pulley, a thermostat, coolant, and a serpentine belt. All in $350.

Now the quotes my buddy got ONLY included a new water pump and replacement of however much coolant is lost in the process. But all those other parts are originals with 250K miles on them. They all must come off to get at the WP, so it would be insane NOT to replace them.

So after spending most of yesterday cleaning the garage up so I could work on it, I dig into it at 4.

Getting to it involves disconnecting 3 motor mounts so you can jack the motor up on the passenger side to get at the WP.

It goes something like this...

Took me three hours, three beers, some busted knuckles, and one good forearm bruise to get the WP out. I think it was due...

I really hate wrenching on cars and this is not a fun job for sure, but again, if I could do one a day and net $650, I could learn to enjoy it.

We have a 2006 Prius that use for grocery trips, etc. The hybrid battery light, known as the red triangle of death, came on. I got estimates from $900 to $2500 to replace the battery with a rebuilt. I decided to do some investigation. I found a $12 dollar Android app that works with my OBD reader. It told me there was 2 out of 28 cells that were bad. I bought refurbished cells off Ebay for $70. Took about an hour to pull the battery. A day to discharge/charge all the cells to be level loaded. Then another 2 hours to put the battery back. Back to getting 42+ mpg.
