QuoteEmbittered by critical comments from some top Republicans, outgoing President Donald Trump is said to be considering a launch of a new political party, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Trump, with just hours left in his one-term presidency, would like to call it the "Patriot Party," The Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The report came after Sen. Mitch McConnell, the top congressional Republican, delivered a speech Tuesday blaming Trump for this month's riot at the US Capitol.

"The mob was fed lies," he said. "They were provoked by the president and other powerful people."

It is unclear whether such an effort at a new party would involve the recruitment and running of candidates or serve as a media and merchandise empire for the former president.

In 1968, George Wallace, the far-right segregationist governor of Alabama, won five states while running as the nominee of the American Independent Party. No third-party candidate has won a statewide federal election since, although numerous independents have been elected to Congress.

I am registered as an independent and have been for 20+ years. I don't like the party system as it always ends up putting the party before the people. As far as supporting candidates for a hypothetical Patriot Party, it would depend on the candidate. I support or oppose candidates by their views and actions.

are you judging? it sounds like you're judging. I thought that judging someone was the unforgivable sin on the left.  my liberal friends are always reminding me that Jesus warned not to judge.  of course they don't seem to care about any of Jesus's other teachings, just the judging teaching.

I'm not really in favor of a three party system, a four party would work much better.
maybe a Democratic Communist party, Democratic Socialist, Republican Moderate and Republican Conservative. a three party system makes it too easy for the tail to wag the dog.

Lol at "Patriot Party." Patriots of what country? Trumpsterdam? Last I checked patriots don't try and subvert the Constitution of the United States.

Anyway, I think it would be great if he did start his own political party. Him and his idiot minions could go tell conspiracy theory stories on Parler and the rest of us could get on with our lives.

Considering he was never a republican, and the crazed supporters he has aren't either, this would be a good thing.  If nothing else it would help break the 2-party system that has taken hold.

There used to be 2-3 parts of each major party, so you really had 4-6 parties, even though only 2 were really named.  These days the far right has such vocal control of the Republican party and the far left has the same control over the Democratic party that we're stuck with two parties that refuse to work together on anything, and it's destroying the fabric of the country.

No such thing as the Democrat Party in the US but Rush appreciates that you listen.

I'm not a big fan of trump.  But that statement, right there, is worth tucking in the brim of my hat over the next 4 years.

Am I wrong to assume, that if trump was as squeaky clean as Mike Pence and a Democratic candidate had said that, you would still be rooting for that democratic candidate?
