My two younger brothers and me were in the local doc's office about every other week, every summer vacation to get sewed  up.

For some reason, mine were always in my head. They'd give me 4 or 5 shots just to put 5 stitches in. Seemed dumb to me.

I was about 12 with a big gash over my right eye from a collision with an immovable object. I asked the doc how many it was gonna take. He said 5. I told him to just sew it.

I haven't let them numb me up for stitches since.

Well, except for my vasectomy.

That reminds me of the last time I broke my right wrist. This was in about 1973 when my uncle owned a 1916 oldsmobile fire engine which he was restoring. It was beautiful but had a crank start and was a bear to get running. At 17 I was strong as an ox and so was the designated cranker. One day while pulling on that crank it backfired... ouch. I remember hopping around while everyone else in attendance laughed their collective asses off until they realized that I was actually hurt. Someone drove me down to the Doctor Quimby who was a renounced bone doctor due to the hundreds of times that he was needed to set bones with his office sitting at the foot of three ski areas. This was still an the days of doctors doing house calls and as a result I waited...and waited...and waited. Over an hour later he walked in after about 24 hours on duty. He held my wrist, turned it one way and then the other. Then without warning, or anesthetic he folded my wrist. It was the worst pain that I had ever experienced to that moment.

I spent about a year working for a company that drilled water wells and test holes for coal mining companies all over Colorado, Utah and Nevada.
In hindsight, it was one on the coolest jobs I ever had.
The guys I worked with were tough as nails. I was 18, 130 pounds with long hair and took major shit from my co-workers until I showed them I could do the work.
A year working with those guys and Marine Corp boot camp was a cake walk.

One of the guys I worked with was too slow getting his hands out of the way when we were tripping out of a hole one morning. A drill joint caught him and lopped one of his fingers off.
He picked up his finger, stuck it in his shirt pocket, wrapped his snot rag around his hand and said
Well, I guess I'm going to town.
He drove himself into town, was back in 3 hours, and worked the next three day finishing up the hole.

I broke my wrist in 2015. took several days to get into an orthopedic. He shot the bone up with Novocain. Then we got to hold hands while he arm wrestled the bones back in place. Used my right hand to cover my mouth, preventing the girly scream gettin out. ::)  ;D

Quote from: Newbeeee™ on April 18, 2024, 07:16 AMThe biggest thing I struggle with, is you having long hair....

had long hair is the key point as it did not survive my time as a rough neck.
one night after an 18hr shift slinging drill steel they shut the rig down and told the newb (me) to change the oil on the drill rigs diesel engine.
I'd never done anything like that.
I asked if I could eat first so the engine could cool down.
An hour later, I crawled under the rig and unscrewed one of 2 drain plugs.
Being an 18 year old dumb ass I didn't realize 15 gallons of motor oil put considerable pressure on the plug.
As the last thread of the drain plug came out of the hole, the drain plug popped loose and hit me right between the eyes, followed by a high pressure stream of hot dirty motor oil.
My co-workers laughed their ass off.
We were looking at 3 more days onsite till we got near a real shower and my hair was a hopeless mess.
One of the guys sat me on a bucket and I went from a long haired hippy to completely bald.
I never did grow it long again.

My brother just did the same thing. He was walking his dog in the park. He stepped on the edge of the asphalt path and went flying. Ended up with a quadricep tendon tear. They are trying to let heal without surgery.
If things go as planned, he will spend at least six months in a leg brace, then start therapy. They'll check progress in 4 months. He could still have surgery at that time.

I'll say he's lucky, if they're trying to let it heal it's not 100% tear...

I've had a couple PT sessions... I've been able to bend my knee 30° without discomfort. My sessions. they start in earnest on Monday..

I'm still no weight bearing for 2 more weeks...

I don't believe it was a complete tear. He's 70 so a little goes a long way. The dog he was walking is a Dachshund, btw.

Cute dogs but in my experience,  little dogs are constantly under foot...

Yeah mine was a 100% tear, my quad pulled back about 6cm from where it should have been...

Either way,  partially or full,  these things are NOT comfortable
