Last Thursday I ran out to pick up a pizza for dinner...parked on the street, hopped over the snowbank, went in, paid for and received said pizza....

On the way out, stepped on snowbank, went to stop over and my right leg came crashing down about 15" straight down on the pavement with all of my weight and momentum down on my right leg, I felt something snap and proceeded to crash down to the ground..

I could not get up....2 gentlemen came along and helped me up, my right leg would bear no weight. I tossed to the pizza into the back on the car, hobbled to car and managed to drive the <2mi home...hobbled into the house, sat down and told my wife, "I think I just broke my leg"...

Wound up in the ER, Xrays, CAT Scan, Ultrsound...came back no broken bones...doc & nurse came in, did some checking, asked me to raise my leg which I could not do at all....told me they believed I tore the quadriceps muscle away from bone....gave me some pain killers, brace and a pair of crutches and the name of an orthopedic surgeon...

Friday, Surgeon gets me in to see....he believes the same thing, a complete tear of the quadriceps tendon...looking at me knee, he thinks it likely I may have done some other damage as well...orders and MRI to get a picture of the full scope of the damage....

SUffice to say, I fucked some shit up...I am scheduled for surgery to repair the damage on 4/11....

UGH!

QuoteIMPRESSION:
1.  Full-thickness tear of the superficial and middle layers (rectus
femoris and vastus medialis/lateralis contributions) of the
quadriceps tendon at the insertion with up to 5 cm tendon retraction.
Intact deep layer. Poorly defined hematoma/hemorrhage is present
about the quadriceps tendon defect, beyond the field-of-view.
2.  Full-thickness tear within the MPFL insertion to the patella with
gap measuring up to 2 cm transverse, extending into the distal vastus
medialis muscle. The medial patellofemoral retinaculum appears
intact.
3.  Intramuscular edema within the visualized vastus medialis, vastus
lateralis, and medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle, extending
distal to the field of view, likely reflecting muscle strains.
4.  Small joint effusion with mild synovial hypertrophy or hemorrhage
in the suprapatellar recess.
5.  Grade 1/2 chondromalacia within the lateral patellar facet and
central femoral trochlea. Diffuse grade 1/2 chondromalacia in the
medial compartment.
6.  Moderate diffuse subcutaneous edema at the anterior aspect of the
knee, extending beyond the field of view of the study.

Jeez that was a wild story. If I were religious I'd say I'll pray for you... I'm not religious... I'll cross my fingers for you. And hope for a short, successful surgery, and a speedy recovery.

Oh man.. sorry JP.  Hope you recover fast.  :(

Eventful is one word for it I guess.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Happily, it is remarkable what they're able to do in medicine now, repairing soft tissue injuries and such.

Best wishes for a full recovery. Keep your chin up. Do your physical therapy. In time you may very well be stronger than you were before!

Yikes! sorry to hear that. Here are some things to think about while you're laid up though

1) If you had eaten broccoli at home instead of pizza, you'd still be fine

2) If you believed in God, you'd have someone to be angry with right now but since you're athiest, you're on your own.

3) these are all things that Greta Thunberg and the like never bring up when they complain about the dangers of Global warming. What about the dangers of ice and snow!!

Hope ya get better soon. :)

But my wife would have been upset she didn't get her pizza...I'll weigh those odds  :D

Dumbest thing you can do is great angry over an accident...or maybe I should just thank god for doing his will  :P

Geesh JP I hope you do better at getting well =)

Ouch. Sorry to hear, John. Hoping for a successful surgery. They'll fix you. I'm sure a long rehab awaits, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

That sounds painful, expensive and serious.
I suspect it will take a while to come back from an injury like that.
A broken leg might have been the better option.
I do believe in God and will pray for your quick recovery.

Luckily or whatever this year, I changed up my health insurance at the start of the year to a lower deductible plan, mostly because of my wife's on-going cancer treatments...that I am going to end up going into the deep end on this is either luckily to prophetic...either way though..

5-6 month full recovery time...I think that beats a 6 month full leg cast by a bit  ;)

Thank you

Dude...that sucks!  :wallbash:

Just goes to show that our routine activities can turn into anything but routine in a second.

Hoping you can bounce back from this as soon as possible.
