Look! If I were trying to make a case for Christianity and I said, atheism has killed more people than any system of beliefs in history. An atheist would have every right to bring up religious wars as a rebuttal. Whataboutisms aren't typically side by side comparisons. They're deflections.

If we're talking about a constitutional violation, and you show a similar act that set a precedence proving that it wasn't actually a violation, that's not a whataboutism. I wouldn't call your example above a whataboutism.

If I'm talking to you about the current National Security team accidentally inviting a reporter into the conversion while using Signal, and you bring up Biden getting people killed in Afghanistan as a deflection, then that is a whataboutism. Hillaries emails would be a closer comparison and all you've done by bringing that up is show that both parties are incompetent?

If I were listening to a presidential debate and one of the candidates repeatedly said, that's whataboutism. with no other statement for clarification, I'd probably think he lost the debate.
