they had been holding oil company stocks for a long time, their money hasn't been growing much in quite a few years.

I inherited $100K worth of Exxon in 2015.
I let it ride, reinvesting the dividends and paying income taxes on those dividends.
In December 2025 I sold enough to pay cash for our retirement home and still have $120K worth of Exxon left.
The capital gains taxes on that stock sale were ugly, but the way I look at it, I still have the initial inheritance and a free house.
