Quote from: Smit on October 02, 2025, 07:53 AMI guess the first thing we should do is agree on what the definition of truth is because I know you're not going to want to use the dictionary definition.

you have a tendency to deflect when you know I'm right.  ;)  that's alright. I'll take the win.  ;D

Quote from: Smit on October 01, 2025, 02:03 PMLook at Missouri...I'm sure you've noticed the voters there have repeatedly voted for amendments to the state constitution and their elected officials repeatedly try to repeal them. Of course then their elected officials try to take away their right to hold those elections. Pretty democratic, right?

I never answered this question.

to be honest, I sit here conflicted over these issues. I probably shouldn't be, but the truth is, they are representing my views when they try to overturn these amendments but they are overturning the will of the people who voted for them and I don't like that. All in all a lot of people that I know who vote republican are sitting here saying, what is going to happen when the other party is in office?  It already happened to missouri when the state voted overwhelmingly against gay marriage and then democrats got our consitutional amendment overturned. that amendment passed with 71% approval. Democrats used the courts to overturn rather than congress, but at the same time, you didn't hear democrats complaining about thwarting the will of the people then.

Smit is the one opposed to using dictionaries and thinks period specific dictionaries are "fringe documents". He's got the undeniable reputation of holding that opinion.

You have absolutely no idea how much I pay in Federal taxes. You cannot possibly know that with any degree of certainty. State taxes... of course you do. You live in the 3rd or 4th highest taxed state in the union. No kidding.

:coffee:

Of course I don't, but the way you run your mouth, I'm sure I pay more.

What is truth (in my Charlie Kirk voice)?

The truth is we don't know if any of those people ever ate a pet. They very well may have. Somebody's dog, somebody's cat, their gerbile, a pet cow or lamb.

So when we say "They're eating the pets" it is not an untruth. Is it a truth? Maybe it is.

Who is to say "What is true, and what is not true? Only GAWD can make that decision with a certainty."

But sure...you win.  :)

Anyway....I'm going to go mow the yard. Here is some reading material if you're interested. Some of it might be surprising to a Republican.

truth /troo͞th/
noun

Conformity to fact or actuality.
"Does this story have any truth?"

Reality; actuality.
"In truth, he was not qualified for the job."

The reality of a situation.
"The truth is, she respects your work."

A statement proven to be or accepted as true.
"truths about nature."

Such statements considered as a group.
"researchers in pursuit of truth."

Sincerity; integrity.
"the truth of his intentions."

Fidelity to an original or standard.
"the truth of the copy."

If you were criticizing Democrats, do you think you would get the same "if you don't like it, you're free to leave" sentiment?

It's hard to tell in this case.   :D
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

The 1st Amendment isn't there to protect what you like to hear, see, read, etc... It's there to protect the things you don't want to hear, see, read, etc... That said, there are laws relating to libel and slander (not protected), and "decency" laws that govern certain types of "expression" for lack of a better term.... that you cannot claim "freedom of speech".

Freedom of Speech doe NOT mean freedom of consequences. Someone can go on X or IG, rip their boss, call him all kinds of things, make funny (to them) memes of him and their company, etc... People are absolutely positively free to do that, just like he's free to call them into the office and terminate them for it. People could go to LinkdIn on their personal time, not representing their company, and say all sorts of things. Things that perhaps some of their customers may not be in alignment with, something like they Charlie Kirk's killer was probably a jilted ex lover or something like that. It could be brought to their company's attention and if they are lucky they could just be WTF'd and reprimanded, or they could be terminated. All legal. All Constitutional.

People think the Constitution protects them from their poor judgement. It does not, nor has it ever.

You're the worst example of America, so I think really YOU should leave.

Plus I'm paying more state and federal taxes than you so giiiiiiit outta hea.

While he may be the worst example of America, he is absolutely the best thing this forum has going for it. With every post, he fills the reader with an image of him sitting in his chair in full tactical gear, furiously pounding away on his keyboard, ending each post with an emphatic stab at the enter key, at the same time exclaiming a loud "HURRUMPH," his job being done.

I just hope he knows how much entertainment he's providing.

Let's go on a dictionary cruise then, shall we?

con·form·i·ty
/kənˈfôrmədē/
noun
noun: conformity

compliance with standards, rules, or laws.

Who decides the standards, rules or laws? Some guy/gal who showed up to vote on a particular day. Does that make it true?

fact
/fak(t)/
noun
noun: fact; plural noun: facts

a thing that is known or proved to be true.

Can't get behind that one purely from a circular logic perspective. Truth=Fact=Truth, sure 1=1 too but that doesn't mean a hell of a lot if we're trying to define something.

re·al·i·ty
/rēˈalədē/
noun
noun: reality

    1.
the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.

Nobody can know what happened in a place/time they weren't. Pictures, audio, opinions, video, books can all be altered. So a perceived reality outside of what you experience with your own senses (which also may falter) can't be trusted. For example, we trust in the fact that because a lot of people say Gaza exists, that it is an actual place, because I doubt anyone here has been there to check 1st hand.

There's a reason why philosophers have grappled with this question for millennia, and your claims are as useful as "settled science". You seem to believe that truth exists as a singular unwavering entity, that simply cannot be so, and that is why there is tension between viewpoints. Unless we get to that root, then we can't get far.
