I have a friend who has successfully battled crippling addiction, so far. He said at first it was "I'm just smoking pot. At least I'm not doing hard drugs". Then it was "At least I'm just smoking it and not using needles". Finally, he was homeless, living in a stolen car, carrying a gun and using needles. That's when he decided he needed help.

That was 100% my rationale during my last year-ish of addiction. "At least I'm not an IV drug user." I look back and just shake my head. 

Today I just say, "I'm grateful to be on this side of the grass." 6 of my friends didn't escape the 80's/early 90's. We buried all six before I was 21.

As someone who was into the punk scene, Chief Gates really pissed me off in the '80s. You?
