Yesterday at BJJ, my knee made a pop so loud the guys rolling next to me and my rolling partner stopped to ask what the pop was. I felt it pop out and back in. Got up and stretched out. Felt ok so I did a few more rounds. Then I was getting up from the mat and felt some weird pain. Called it a day and went home to ice it. Was a little sore when I went to bed. Woke up very tight. I'm at the orthopedic sports doctor now. X-ray didn't show anything so they want to schedule an MRI. Kind of bummed out because as of late my BJJ is feeling strong and I could tell I was progressing. I really hope it just swollen and no torn stuff.

I was at a taekwondo tournament was that held at the Indian Center here. Bare concrete floor, no mats. We were sparring for points. I was not having a good day and lost my match. During the match, I had slipped once. I got back up and finished and thought nothing of the slip. I stayed a couple of more hours watching the action. When my wife and I got up to leave I couldn't put any weight on my left foot. Right where my ankle and foot came together there was a giant goose egg. We had driven there in my 68 MG Midget. My wife had never driven a stick. At least the fear kept my mind off the pain.

I really liked TKD but was apparently not very good at it. I was getting ready for my first tournament when I broke my big toe into three pieces (opponent blocked a kick with his knee). One of the instructors told me I had just jammed it and instructed me to stand on the end of my toe and pull it back. My toe was not jammed.

At my 2nd tournament I got kicked in the taint so hard that my whole groin area (yes, the WHOLE groin area) turned black.

My last tournament was the one with the ankle. All of that was when I was 28 or younger. All three still bug me.

Good luck, hope it's just a strain.

ACK!

The shop owner here is in his mid 40's. He used to play hockey when he was young so he decided to start playing again on a REC league to get back in to shape.

In the last couple of years he's shown up to work barely able to walk from taking a nasty spill on the ice. This year he bruised some ribs and could barely breathe for a week or two.

He keeps going back though so it must not be hurting him that bad.

My brother in law was playing in a rec league about 10 years ago, wearing a helmet and half-visor.
A guy's stick came up under the visor and hit him in the eye.
Detached his retina. Now he only has one good eye.

I have some injuries that seem to somewhat permanent. My feet hurt often. My right big toe only bends about half of what it should. My elbows often ache. I do wonder if I am doing real damage to my body. However, I just don't think I could quit. I don't know that I can define what level of BJJ I could be content with but I know I'm not there now. It's unfinished business.

That was my knee in my early 40's and the last time i went skiing. It went out just the same sound and popped back in. Went to stand up on it after it went in and i feel flat on my face again.

Went to the ortho doc and they told me I was geriatric, no surgery. In my 40's and they wouldn't do it, said it may cause too many complications. I did PT for several months and got a really nice tilges brace. does pretty good nowadays but I have to be careful hyperextending it. Ladders I have to be careful on especially.

good luck with it, I hope you didn't do anything too serious.

Training to start BMX racing again.

I have ZERO expectations beyond getting exercise and having a good time doing it. I survived vert riding as a teenager without any serious injuries, I can do this too.

You may need to temper your expectations especially since this is a newish thing for you and your body. Had you grown up wrestling, maybe taken a couple years off then got into BJJ that would probably be different. #TapSooner

I started training in 2019. I would guess at this point I have well over 1000 hours of mat time. I wouldn't necessarily call that Newish.

It's all relative though.

Your body is going to need you to tap before your mind is ready to accept that.

1,000 hours doing a physically demanding task is a LOT different at 40+ than it is at 20.

The thing is, I do tap when I need to. Especially in leg locks. This was just a fluke movement.

Man I hear ya.  I sat down on a new 2025 Yamaha YZ 250 just two days ago.  I want it so bad, but I'm afraid my racing career is probably cooked.
