FOD came up in a thread discussion a while back; well, it has reared its ugly head again.

They've been refurbishing my machine since the first of the year. It's an over $3 million project. All of the major mechanical work is complete. Now they're doing the fine tuning, getting all of the moving parts to work together. They're trying to get the room laser proofed with limited success so far.

Yesterday, a couple of significant things happened. First, one of the heads, that cost over a million to replace, was almost dropped. It was on a moveable stand when something released and it almost fell to the floor.
Secondly, we were moving the machine in y when we heard a crunch. Apparently, FOD had gotten into the track, 30 feet in the air. The crunch we heard was the gear running over the FOD. It did significant damage, bending teeth.

We were scheduled to start laying down material soon and to be back in production soon after that. Now, that schedule is toast. They're still trying figure out exactly what is broken. Long lead times for parts are expected. It's a big mess.

Nobody knows where the FOD came from. The machine had been moving successfully for weeks. The prevailing theory is that something else failed and scattered debris.

I'll be glad when this is finished.
