Surfaces can really enhance solid modeling, called hybrid modeling.

I use scanned data for automotive parts I design and machine. I need the scanned data to precisely match a car model hood shape, for example. After converting the mesh file (what you get from scanning) to a surface (I use SolidWork's add-in nPowerSurfs, which I can convert a mesh into a surface),... I then use that surface (which matches the hood's complex shape) for trimming the solid. Extrude a solid...trim solid to the surface...then build off of that.

Hybrid modeling can get you complex shapes for your solid model that you just cannot achieve from solid modeling alone.

James has me curious about Coons though, I've heard before that it was very good, I just don't know anything about it.

Here is a video James made on Coons surfaces.

I seem to remember watching that a while back. Forgot all about it! :_thumbup:

^^^ My preference is using partial chaining only in that example. Check mark 'Wait' for the along contours and deselect check mark for the across contours.

It depends on how the 3D wireframe is constructed...

Use the same wireframe geo to compare. Coons works similar to NetSurfs. With a Net Surf you don't have to break your geo at every intersection, you will need to before creating your Coons Surf.

Coons and Net look similar but they are not exact (using the same wireframe geo). The data on them is different, also (control points and degree). There's also some more options (blends) available with Coons (linear, parabolic, cubic, cubic slope matching).

i remember going to cnc for training and they couldn't tell me what the difference was in those choices

I'll go further...

Working in a "locked down" company it is simply too much of a PITA to get Mastercam versions installed....chasing more things...too much a PITA to be be bothered.

If X+ is a C-hook.  I use the hell out of 'em.  If not then I never use them.

In future versions of Mastercam, you wont need extra content installed to access the chook api features.

If and when that time arrives and I don't need admin privileges to do something, I would be more open to exploring different options...

Heck, we still don't even have 2022 installed yet

In Mastercam 2022 admin privilidges aren't needed anymore, mastercam loads extensions from the
"C:Users*user*DocumentsMy Mastercam 2022MastercamAdd-Ins" folder so you don't need admin anymore.
