Quote from: pmartin on August 22, 2022, 07:09 AMIf you need a book to develop mental toughness that's okay I guess, but life often tosses challenges onto a persons plate without asking permission. Here is one of several that I have had to deal with.

About 10 years ago I suffered a workplace accident. I walked away from it with torn cartilage in one hip. I dealt with the pain for about 6 months. The doctor who saw me initially diagnosed it as pulled muscles and prescribed muscle relaxants. (No help whatsoever) I battled with Workman's Comp and finally got an MRI which showed the problem clearly. I got surgery, Programmed from home for a couple of weeks and went on with my life. A year later the pain returned with a vengeance. Workers comp was done with me and I lived with the pain for another year. Never missing work, not taking pain meds, just having to basically drag my body from point A to point B., It got to the point that I could not sit, stand, or lie down without pain. New Doctor, two hip replacements needed. I organized it so that my two surgeries were 4 days apart. I brought my computer setup down to one of my garage bays and set it up to program from home.

Now there are a ton of details that I have left out but if I am a bit dismissive of a 75 day mental toughness test I'll just say why so short?

Sounds like my right hip for the last 30 years.  I hurt it doing Tae Kwan Do as a teenager, and the doctors were of zero help.

All that I can say is that my new hips came with a new lease on life. Well. not all that I can say. My knees bothered me for years but stopped hurting after my hip replacements. The only thing that I miss is skiing. I loved skiing the bumps and I know damned well that if I started skiing it wouldn't be long before I started hitting the black diamond trails. No way will I be back in the hospital getting a new hip replacement because I did something stupid.

Is there not an 'undo rating' link on the right side of the message?  If not, I'll look to make sure it's available.  You *should* be able to undo and change a rating.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Drinking a gallon of water by mid afternoon combined with two 45 minute exercise routines...be careful that your sodium levels don't drop too low. Also, drinking that much water will lower your potassium levels. Also, to me, I would include all liquids as water. It has health benefits, but with that much water daily - make sure you know about the pros and cons.

Meh, not worried about that. I know what works for my body.

I too love skiing and BITD where the ice chutes and bumps were... that's where I was. I warmed up on Black Diamond runs.

1991 I was in a motorcycle accident. Knee wasn't/isn't in great condition. Got married had a family. No more skiing. Couldn't afford it. Fast forward to 2014. Get an invitation to take the Boy Scout Troop skiing/snowboarding and we go. Ski Season 1990 was the last time I was on the slopes. Wife was pissed I was going AND skiing. SHe's like "If you get hurt, you'll get NO sympathy from me, and you WILL climb the stairs every f'n night to our bedroom. You hear me?" I got the last word though... "Yes dear". Any way. I've been skiing a few times since. Now that I have a kid in Utah, there's gonna be way more skiing in my future. Gotta get tmy grand daughters on the slopes.

I stay off the bumps and out of the ice chutes. SKi teh bunny slopes the first few runs to get warmed up, and then I cruise. :) I go down a few Black Diamond runs every trip. The knee is no worse. I will say though, it sure feels good on my knee when I ski backwards. It's hard not doing the stuff I loved to do when I was young but I SO enjoy skiing that putting limits on myself allows me to continue to enjoy it. The threat of having to climb stairs every night is a good deterrent.
