That is a question most people don't like to really think about. They all have the big AG corp media image of happy pasture grazing cows and are ok believing that is where the meat they buy comes from.

I would say 90% of our meat comes from Michigan. I was told our local meat market buys from Michigan farms and that is where most of our meat comes from. The other place where we get meat is a health grocery store but I'm not sure where they get they get theirs from. They have very good prices and have either grass fed or organic meats but they are also 40 miles away from us so we don't get there often.

Most supermarket meats are corn or grain fed and that's about as bad of food an animal can get.

There are up to a billions cows/cattle on earth each year for the purpose of food. There is simply not enough land for the majority of them to be pasture fed. The result is unsustainable feed crops and grain fed livestock. It is not a matter of if, but when. In the future real meat will be a very expensive luxury item.

Especially when Bill Gates is buying as much pasture land as he can get.

In the future meat will be printed.

We finally got a good rain on Monday. I honestly can't remember how long it had been since that happened.

That is a definite possibility. Lab grown proteins could be a factor but unfortunately there is too much money at play for it to really be adopted large scale. The 10 largest AG companies control 90% of the worlds food supply. There are billions of dollars every year in feed crops for livestock that they are not going to give up easily. They will continue to over-till the ground and keep creating more genetically modified crops until they have turned enough land into desert and a huge portion of the worlds population are starving. Even then they wield so much power over governments that they will "provide" the solution to the problem they created. Hence, evil Bill Gates buying all the farmland and investing in genetic food engineering companies.

Quote from: YoDoug on October 24, 2022, 12:21 PMIf everyone adopted a plant based diet annual water use would drop by some estimates of up to 52%. Just saying  ;)

How does swapping land used to feed animals to land used to feed humans reduce water usage? Last I checked vegetables and fruit still consume water (lots of water) to grow.

Humans don't need the same amount of total calories as livestock. Estimates are only about 1/4 of the land needed to feed people versus livestock.

I can't say I've ever bought, eaten or remember seeing Koegel's. I'll have to look for it.

That's good to hear - I assume michigan is similar to ontario where there's beef production but not in the same stratosphere as other states.

Also the surface area for things we eat vs. grass  / corn for feed

My maternal grandparents were mainly beef farmers but also raised pork and both eating and egg laying poultry. They weren't certified organic but probably would have gotten certification had they chosen to pay for the audit.
