Good movie. It was pretty intense. It caught my interest and held it to the end. Definitely worth a watch.

I had no idea Vigo Mortenson (?) played one of the British divers.

I didn't either until I watched the show.

I didn't recognize him. I didn't know who he was until I looked up the cast.

I did recognize both Mortensen and Colin Farrell during the film but not right away. It was kinda like, man, those guys look familiar before it clicked. :)

They did a good job of making them look like grubby cave divers.

I didn't realize it was a Ron Howard movie either until the credits rolled. Howard has made some really good movies so I probably would have watched it sooner had I realized that. I knew it was a Prime movie so I kind of dismissed it.

Brendan Frasier winning the Oscar made me curious about "The Whale".
Artistically it's a great movie with really great acting.

It is one of the most utterly depressing movies I've ever seen. It is not something you would watch if you're looking for a fun evening.

You know, on second thought, some people may enjoy watching a man who abandoned his family to be with his gay lover, who subsequently committed suicide, become morbidly obese to the point he's dying. He then tries to reconcile with his daughter.
Everytime he thinks he's dying he reads an essay his daughter wrote. It's a regular yuck fest.

It just so happens the wife and I watched "The Whale" last night. It is a really good movie but it was very sad. At the end we just looked at each other and said "damn."

To me every character in the movie was a sympathetic figure.

I guess maybe he found peace at the end.

I will say if you watch it you'll see a good movie but it won't be uplifting. Not to me anyway.

I think, as a piece of art, it's excellent. The oscar was well deserved.
It's not a first date kind of movie, though.

I didn't have as much sympathy for Charlie. It seemed to me that his selfishness carried through to the end. He wasn't part of his daughter's life until he knows he's about to die and then decides to reconnect with her, just in time to die and leave her all over again.

Did you notice at very end it showed him walking in the surf with a little girl playing in the sand?

My theory is that when Charlie died he was walking towards his daughter; when he collapsed he fell on her and killed her and the end showed them both in heaven.

TA DA!

Lol. I hadn't considered that outcome to the ending!

I took it to be a flash back to a happy time.

^^^Any other movies you guys would like to spoil for the rest of us?^^^
:harhar: (j/k)

I haven't seen The Whale, and probably won't.

I did see the final episode of 'Your Honor' on Showtime.
Bryan Cranston has stated publicly that the series is now over.
If that is the case, the ending was less than satisfying IMO.

I was thinking the same thing.   Those should be prefaced with <spoiler alert>  :D

I apologize if I ruined it for anyone.

It's pretty much a forgone conclusion right from the start of the movie. It's what happens in between that's interesting.

Yeah, I got carried away. I didn't spill all the beans though.
And it still wasn't as depressing as Sophie's Choice. I don't think.
