I personally think that there a lot of things that we could do to help with the problem.

1) enforce the gun crime laws that are in place, by actually sending people to prison for using a gun in a crime.
2) enforce truancy laws to keep kids in schools
3) expect more of people, rather than making excuses for them
4) build relationships between law enforcement and the community they serve

There is a lot more along these lines. but my overall belief is that this all has to be done at the local level rather than a federal level. The Federal level costs too much, creates layers of bureaucracy, and is almost always ineffective.

Quote from: beej on June 01, 2023, 08:45 AMWhy don't we try going back to what worked in the past?

We don't appear to be doing anything about it. Except ignore it. We've done a good job of that? :D

I would agree with this. At least to a certain extent. What works in the City doesn't really work in rural areas.

#1 Enforcing laws is racist, especially if applied to any minority
#2 Enforcing truancy is racist because minorities
#3 Racist, what more need be said
#4 Police are doubly racist, especially if they speak with minorities.

I somewhat jest with these but pick up any "city" newspaper and many of these things are outwardly proclaimed...everything it seems is racist.

Even this post is racist to many.

The world is upside down at this point

I would argue that these things are already being done in rural areas. Here in my county, cops get involved with little league baseball, and organizations like 4H, and they host DARE dances which helps them build relationships with middle school children. Our judges have no problem throwing the book at criminals, although, most of the criminals are white so there is no racist element to it. And there are a lot of community pride events, like 4th of July shows, Night of a 1000 stars at Christmas, community easter egg hunts, and if a kid isn't showing up at school, the principal will talk to his parents at church on Sunday about it.

Anything?

If someone is going to answer this honestly, no.

When they're handing firearms out to every swinging dick that hasn't 'yet' committed a crime, even if their intentions are nefarious (to beej's comment), this is what we're going to get.

I don't know if my thinking is out in left field on this?

20 years ago I would rarely hear about a local shooting on the news.  It would happen maybe once every couple of months.  Now, there are several (some times as many as 10) a night.

I'm glad I'm old and don't go out after dark anymore.   Nothing good happens after dark.

who is "They" (as far as they are handing out guns...)

I wonder how much of a correlation there is between the stats on less people attending church on a regular basis and more people committing crime. I can't help but think there is a connection there, even if it is not because of a belief in God and eternal life, but from the aspects of community involvement and an overall sense of hope.

So how do you prevent that?  Department of Pre-Crime?

Exactly

Again...what has changed?  The was nothing before the GCA of 1968 and this crap didn't happen?  Guns haven't changed.

and I am most certainly not saying "let's don't do anything" but the question stands...

"What can be changed that doesn't infringe on a person's civil rights?"

Despite what some would claim there are NO easy answers....

As a society we've reached the point that, if someone could snap their fingers right "now" and make ALL firearms just disappear....we would simply see more knife, hammer, baseball bat, automobile and anything else you can imagine...the truth is we already see these happening, guns just get the spotlight for nefarious reasons.

We could just make murder illegaler...that should do it

Residents reach breaking point after Auburn apartment complex sees five shootings in five days

This isn't too far from where I live.

I remember when you would never hear about a shooting in Auburn.  There's nothing there.

Certainly the culture around guns have changed. Especially for younger people.  Back when I was in my 20's I knew probably 5 people who carried firearms.  They were all people who were outdoorsy. Hunted etc.  Now, I don't think that I know anyone who doesn't have one, most of which aren't responsible enough to wipe their own asses after taking a dump.

What can we do? Oh, I don't know...  ENFORCE THE LAW???

Nahhhhh. We can't do that because that's #Raycis.

Punish people that do bad stuff. Stop looking to create criminals at school board meetings where parents are attempting to hold school boards accountable for their bullshit and start looking for criminals where and when they do bad shit that affects us all. Let's start by putting George Soros and his hand picked pieced of shit DA's up against a wall to face a firing squad for what they have done to our cities Let's start there and see where we get.

Shall we discuss the games they play?  While I don't lay the blame completely there, there's the entire discussion of desensitization and we see the brazen crap these kids are doing.....the glorification of the "thug" culture, to glorification of "Goodfellas"....kids growing up in broken families, fathers simply following what their fathers did....

Guns aren't the problem, they are symptom of a broken society and tattered social fabric...as I stated above, make them go away, all of them, nothing would change except there'd be no firearms.

Most don't want to look at the societal issues because there are too many people that would have to look in the mirror.

When they're handing firearms out...
Wait.... WHERE IS THIS HAPPENING?

I've been around for a minute and I've NEVER seen firearms being "handed out". Firearms are NOT easier to obtain than a "library card". If they are and you are right neuro, that's illegal AF. So.... where are they doing this?
