Quote from: JakeL on August 15, 2023, 06:27 AMI saw a Washington Post headline saying climate change was the cause   :bdh:

According to twitter space lasers, Alex Jones says it's antifa with gasoline & lighters,

I read an opinion that it was caused by the altering of the landscape that happens around a growing town. It also said that some streams had been diverted from their natural paths for that expansion.

I guess I always think of all the Hawaiian Islands as lush tropical rainforestity type places. Is Maui not like that?

Haven't you heard?  Opera burned it all down so she could buy the property?  Or something like that?

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

and abandoned suger cane fields that ran right up to the town. when they are managed they control burn.

so many ingredients underlying this.  also no warning system was activated.
very sad about the town but even worse the loss of life.

Nope. It's one of the rare places on earth that has desert, tropical rainforest, and snow all with a few miles. The Lahaina area is desert and has tons of dry brush going up the mountain. They get less than 10 inches of rain a year. But just a couple miles away it's up to 400 inches a year.

I'm not surprised at the fire, as the conditions were 100% perfect. High warm hurricane strength winds coming over the mountain and directly into town. Haven't heard if they found the direct cause of the fire starting, but if it's from electrical lines it wouldn't surprise me either.

Lets not forget that much of this town was built in the 1880's with no fire codes or building codes
They were built of wood which has been baking in a desert climate for 140 years.
Add some hot dry winds and a carelessly tossed cigarette and you have a ready made tragedy.

Correct. The older homes in Hawaii were built for airflow not to stop fire. You get 60mph winds outside, there are 60mph winds running through the homes and attics. Only takes an ember getting into the attic on those old tinderboxes and the entire house is on fire.

I saw an article the other day that colonialism was to blame. Anything to blame the white man I guess.

Maui fires?
"ROFL no comment"  ~ Joe Biden

On a side note, Jeff Bezos is supposedly donating $100mill to the relief effort.
From what I've heard there isn't enough room to store things.
I would assume that a Navy ship or Coast Guard would have something in the area to help with storage. I haven't really been following it much though.
