JERUSALEM (AP) — Hamas militants fired thousands of rockets and sent dozens of fighters into Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday Saturday, killing dozens and stunning the country. Israel said it was now at war with Hamas and launched airstrikes in Gaza, vowing to inflict an "unprecedented price."

Several hours after the incursion began, Hamas militants were still fighting gunbattles inside several Israeli communities near Gaza. Israel's national rescue service said at least 40 people have been killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years. Also, an unknown number of Israeli soldiers and civilians had been seized and taken into Gaza.

At least 198 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed in Israel's retaliation and at least 1,610 wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said.

An adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei congratulated Palestinian fighters for the attack.

My wife's best friend and her entire family are in Israel. She also said many of her students from last year are there. They usually go to Israel for a year after graduation. Many of them serve in the military before coming back. She's trying to contact her friend but they usually have their phones off when they are there, especially since it's a holiday.

This is the same friend who lost a favorite aunt in the attack in Pittsburgh a couple of years ago.

The US has consistently held them at bay to back down....the US needs to get out of the way. Make no mistake about it, the US is in their way every time on this.

While I question whether peace can really be had, it's tough to find common ground when one side simply wants you dead, there can be no really attempt at peace until one side is defeated.

War is hell and if that's what they want, then let them have.

and yes, I completely understand the underlying issues of who is pulling the strings and behind most of the strife.  I also understand that Israel has to give a little as well and that is nearly impossible to do when you are starting at the point of negotiating for your very life.

I have said this for years, if the Palestinians would lay down their arms and negotiate, there would be peace. If Israel laid down their arms and negotiate, there would be 5 million Jews floating in the Med tomorrow.

The horrors inflicted by Hamas sparked rage and an intense feeling of vulnerability. Where Hamas had always seemed an implacable but ultimately containable enemy, it had now proven it could bring the danger into Israeli homes, could slaughter children and kidnap grandmothers while all the vaunted power of the Israel Defense Forces was helpless to stop it.

Hamas had made itself an intolerable threat.

The change is so profound and palpable that many Israeli analysts, apparently assuming that Hamas understands the consequences that this psychological fallout will have for Gaza, argued on Saturday that the terror group was surprised by its own success.

"In my estimation," tweeted analyst Avi Issacharoff, "the military and political leadership of Hamas did not expect these successes. They meant to kidnap two or three as part of a massive killing spree. But this many? Their problem is that this success may turn into a pyrrhic victory. It seems to me there's now a consensus in the Israeli elite and among the public that nothing will be the same anymore."
