I have been drawing SS for 2+ years now. I waited until full retirement age. But my boss, who knew more than a year ahead of time that I was going to retire sat on his hands and didn't have someone in line to do my job so I volunteered to stay on part time at my full hourly wage. I had several hundred hours of vacation pay banked and kept my apparent hours at 32 hours a week so that I could keep my benefits, including my 401k. With the combined SS plus my salary The money was pouring in. I had the idea that if I maximized my 401k contribution that I could reduce my apparent income. The max contribution was over 20k, money that I will manage until I am 73 when I will need to begin making minimum withdrawals. I am still at work, but only 4 hours a week and I am sending 100% of that income into the 401k because I just don't need the money right now.

I have noticed a real trend here at work in the last couple of years where someone retires and then comes back after about 6 months because they are bored stupid at home. I don't have that problem because my wife and I have a B&B (I am now her apprentice) and I am also renovating another property.
