Man, what a drag....went to a HS reunion back in the fall and learned that 2 classmates died of CV. Up till that point I didn't know anyone (first hand) who had died from this. One had some health issues, and I guess this finished her off. I don't have details about the other, except that he had a couple of teenage kids, a wife, and according to the classmate who told me of his passing, was an ardent anti-vaxxer. I don't know if he had other health issues or not, but RIP Bill.

I have had a few classmates die from covid, back when it was hitting the hardest.

One that was particularly poignant for me was a guy that had been one of the most popular guys in school, mainly because he was a really good guy. He retired from the fire department, then his wife died of breast cancer. He got ahold of a fire truck and painted it pink and did fundraising and cancer awareness events all over. He met another woman and they became a couple but never married. He got sick and went downhill fast. He married his partner while he was in the hospital and he passed a day or two later.

I just got a phone call last night that an old high school friend died from Covid yesterday.

I was pretty shocked. This guy was in really good shape. Rode his bicycle everywhere he went. Worked as a landscaper so was always on the move. Wasn't over weight. Was in his early 50s so not too old.

Hard to believe it's still taking people out like this.

Nearing the end of March

We're up to 48 sick call-outs in a shop that has 16 employees.

We rarely get a sick call-in here. but we did get a call-in last week because I was apparently mean to a guy, when I made a joke about not caring about his happiness.  ::)

We had 6 people call in sick yesterday alone.

Luckily we don't have people with thin skin here or nobody would ever show up for work.

Are they actually sick or something else going on.

We have one guy who is actually sick. The others just call in when they don't feel like working.

We can tell who is who because the chronic call-outs are always on a Monday.

I missed around 15-16 weeks last year.  I get 1 week PTO and 4 weeks vacation.  All of it was gone by end of March early April. Called in more last year than the 40+ years before. Sometimes life just throws you a curve ball. Use your time when your younger and healthy. My rule is never leave a paid day on the books. The one thing you can't get back is time.

Not long ago I'd reached out to an old boss of mine. I hadn't talked to him in 15 years. He had been battling throat cancer for years. We were talking about how much time I spend on the road and that was the first thing he said to me.  You can't get back that time.

He passed away a few months later.  I was super glad that I reached out to him when I did.

7 call-ins today. Not bad compared to normal. But hey, I'm old and nothing is normal anymore.
