Basically, it's both.  

When I originally designed it, it was meant to be a steady rest. The part was almost as big as the chuck so I started to get nervous and decided to make it a clamp/steady rest combo. We have two sizes of these to make so that center piece is an adapter for the smaller size.

I'll try to post a picture once we get a little further in to the machining.  I can't post finish photo's. The customer is a bit of a pain that way.

You have a RAM? Working on a console lock vault for GM trucks now. Finished except I'm waiting on a lock we need to locate (buy in quantity). 15 components in assembly (all precisely fit). Designed the hinge (assembly now... 3 part files, the two sides of hinge and the rod). The hinge assembly in the main assembly now.

There's another one I'm starting on very soon. It's for RAM trucks (2019+).

Yes, I finally sacked up and got a Laramie instead of the Big Horn. Man what a world of difference in how it rides.
