Sort of off topic but not really.

Has anyone watched "3 Body Problem"?

Essentially, a group of scientists shoot a very powerful signal into space in attempt to contact aliens. Years later one of them gets a reply. "I am a pacifist. My people are conquerors. DO NOT REPLY!".

The woman thinks that the world is fucked and invites the aliens. Her logic being that we can't fix ourselves so maybe they can. The aliens aren't interested in fixing us. They'll be here in 400 years.

No worries, I'm still interested in watching it. Just don't give away any more.

funny, that's why I've been a lifelong libertarian.  ;D
using a sin metaphor for an amoral issue is not your best work, yet what you're really, very arrogantly, saying is you believe you can be a better arbiter between buyer and seller for all transactions by decree.

Quote from: YoDoug on April 17, 2024, 10:04 AMHousing is a geographically limited commodity. You can only build so many homes where the people live and work. Greedy capitalist corps see this and say if we buy up enough houses it will effect supply. We also can rent them out and skew rental prices in our favor.
uuhhh..NO, that's not how real estate works in a free market.
commies really dont understand the supply side of an economic issue. Housing density and large apartment buildings aided the growth of new york city, the hub of world finance.
All those buildings are now illegal to build and rent controlled by your communist party buddies. And it's now why it's slowly turning into a third world shithole. No google FB or Apple to be spawned there.
Suburban sprawl is a direct consequence of gov't getting in the way of efficiency and why your average human spends hundreds of hours in soul crushing traffic.
but, yeah, more government will 100% fix everything. rainbows and unicorns.

It's not an amoral issue. Capitalism is amoral, but people are not. They put their own morals into how they practice capitalism.

wait, how is risking your money to speculate buying real estate immoral? Did anyone call you immoral for buying your house?
Fat cats paying off politicians to get preferential treatment (aka lobbying 101) is shirley immoral.
Asking market rate rent is also immoral, too?

Sorry to come off as an asshole, yet again. I know all these article bemoaning Blackrock et al. buying up neighborhoods is now in the popular culture. What doesn't get reported is how they ended upside down by overpaying. Zillow and opendoor are not exactly having a good time with these type of strategies.

There is a whole lot more to the series than what I mentioned. Lots of intrigue. And some very unique Sci fi  stuff.

I found it extremely interesting.

have you checked out Warriors on Netflix. The best Kung-fu show i've ever seen. Blood, tits and a fantastic plot line.
Its actually based on writings of Bruce Lee. The star paid homage to some of his moves. some were subtle.

Real estate, as in land, is a finite amount. There is only so much land to build single family homes in areas where people want to live. If a greedy investors buy up the majority of housing for sale in an area they are effectively "cornering the market". This is what has happened since Covid. That is why housing prices jumped faster than ever before. They may well have overextended themselves, but they did it to try to corner the market and control prices.
