so the boss sends me a print that has basically no dimensions on it , that says on the print refer to model for dimensions
boss says I want you to program it and get the " accurate "run times to give to quoting
I say can i get a model there's no way to draw it from the print ,
boss says there is no model available just wing it and guess ...

SO HOW WOULD THAT BE AN ACCURATE CUT TIME I ASK?

I'd instantly reply "Half an hour."

I would go the over the top ridiculous route.
In my best 'Rainman' voice: "Bout a hundred hours..."

Seriously though, I think we've all had a similar ridiculous conversation at one time or another.
I've done quite a bit of R&D work in my career, so runtimes are generally not an issue.
But when an Engineer asks me how long it will take for a prototype part, my answer is usually "I will let you know after the first one is finished."
They usually just say "OK" and walk away.  :welcome:

we got into it pretty good , I couldn't understand why he's having me fake it when he and the team of quitters/quoters could do the same thing .
The dumb part is he knows its dumb and admits its dumb then has me do it any way .
also came to see the run time on the verify so I had to make up a bullshit part and apply toolpath to a fake ass sketch of a part
guess it all pays the same   :bird:

definitely, definitely...   bout a hundred hour moment

You're lucky,we actually have to provide quotes for the customer beforehand.

When we move a project from R&D to production, yes, we need to have the production costs pretty well nailed down.

But when a product is in the development phase, our time estimates are usually for planning purposes only.
At that point, the 'customer' is generally our own internal Engineering Department.

Multiply the amount of Edges By The Age Of The Operator, divide by 2 for lack of experience and add 15 Minutes Times 6 for Bathroom Breaks.
Subtract half an Hour for Lunch.

Add Deburr time and Q.C.

Oops don't forget load Time and set up.

You should keep the programming hours low(So You Look really Good)

HTH

Seriously?? You have enough experience to make an Educated Guess.

Just Guess.

My Old Boss would do this just to confirm what he already told them.

He has already ordered the Material. You are just gonna Have to Conform.

If I promise half an our and it takes three, isn't that underpromising and overdelivering?
