Quote from: CNCAppsJames post_id=6288 time=1612810290 user_id=62Bullshit! People are lazy and choose to let others rule their lives. Screw that. "Far too complex" my ass. That's a cop out plain and simple.

I assume you wrote from scratch the OS on the computer you're typing on then?  Or did you trust specialists?

That's a stretch. Convenience vs force. My first computer came with no software. Built from scratch. Z80 processor.
Did everything in assembler. No OS.
Now, I don't need to do that, so I don't. But it's still my choice. Nobody RULES your life over your OS.

Writing some basic trinkets on a Z80 is a far cry from a modern networking OS and CADCAM software.  Are you claiming you would be capable of writing all the software you use on a daily basis?  If not, it isn't a matter of choice; you must rely on specialists.

Just in the course of my job, I rely on specialists for:
Computer software
Computer hardware
Machine tools
Machine tool calibration
Inspection equipment calibration
Cutters
Coolant
HVAC
Stock material production
Heat treatment
Anodizing

And I'm sure several other things I'm not thinking of at the moment.  If James' point were valid, then my relying on experts for these things is a matter of laziness, rather than understanding that these experts can do those jobs better, faster, and cheaper than I can.  Similarly, a professional doctor, a medical expert, can very likely achieve far superior results regarding my health, as compared to self treatment based on Google and Facebook.  We have specialists for a reason; I would not expect my mom to machine her own bone plates if she ever needed them.

Some I'm very happy with.  Others not so much, but the task is well beyond my ability.  I am not capable of writing a modern OS or modern CADCAM software.  If I had lottery money and could afford to hire a large team of high-end experts under my direction, maybe something could be accomplished in about a decade, or it could take several.

There have been numerous attempts at writing free, open source OS's and CADCAM software.  Some of the OS's are mostly decent by many accounts, after about thirty years of effort and millions of man-hours, but with significant weaknesses.  The CADCAM on the other hand is hobby grade at best.

This is more of your left field nonsense. James was talking about ceding control of our lives to so called experts.
" I think people for the most part have ceded control over their lives to government and doctors."
Then you turn it into an everybody needs specialists fork.
You remove all choice. I just brought it back. Feasible? Maybe, maybe not. But your black and white whackoism
Allows for no choice. And extremism at its best.

That play on words was pointed. When I created Zoobersoft around '95, there wasn't much choice of OS, and most of my stuff was done and hosted on FreeBSD 2 machines.
I thought Microsoft was a joke, and named my company appropriately.

Not left field at all.  A doctor is just another one of those experts we all rely on.  Let's play it out.

If I suspect I may have a brain tumor, which course of action should I take?

A) Begin designing an MRI machine.

B) Go to a group of specialists that already has one, is familiar with its use, and has a lot of experience interpreting the results and treating patients using that information?

I suppose you'd advocated that everyone who breaks their toe should make and install their own bone screws and plates rather than relying on so called experts?  Self surgery always works out great, doesn't it?

Both of our office girls tested positive for the 'Rona yesterday.

One has a husband in his late 60s in poor health and she looks after her 90+ year old mother.

The other is morbidly obese with breathing issues on good days. She lives with her morbidly obese 80+ year old mother.

Not good at all.
