Dayyyum, so close after Hurricane Helene Florida looks likely to get hit with another major hurricane. You guys be careful down there. Evacuation looks like a good idea.

I used to think about getting a beach home for retirement on the coast but after the devastation I've seen from hurricanes I think I'll just stay here and rent when I go on vacation. :ouch:

Hurricane Milton reaches Category 4 strength days before it's poised to hit Florida

Excerpt:
QuoteLess than two weeks after Hurricane Helene slammed into Florida's Gulf Coast and wreaked a path of destruction across the southeastern U.S., the state is again on high alert for another rapidly intensifying storm.

Forecasters upgraded Milton from a tropical storm to a hurricane on Sunday, a day earlier than expected, and warn that it is poised to reach Category 4 strength before making landfall in Florida midweek.

It strengthened into a "major" Category 3 hurricane early Monday morning when its maximum sustained winds started nearing 125 mph. It quickly intensified to Category 4 status with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, the National Hurricane Center said just after 9 a.m. ET.

They are now saying it will be a Cat5 soon. It is projected to make landfall about 60 miles north of our facility down there. The building is in Zone C for evacuation. They have called for mandatory zone A and B evacs. Looks like it's going to be a serious one.

Earlier this month when I was there during Helene, I was amazed at the number of Bobcats after the storm being used to "snowplow" sand back to the beach. I have to go back in three weeks. I am sure it will not be the same.

We normally take a trip right about now. But my wife's work has been a little crazy so we couldn't get away.

But no shit, the two places we were looking at months back were the Ashville NC area or Siesta Key.

We have always vacationed during hurricane season and been lucky with the weather.

I do lot of trips during hurricane season also and have been lucky so far.

We've had a couple close calls. One was in Roatan, Honduras, about 10 years ago. A major storm was predicted to hit about 2 days after our scheduled departure. Of course we didn't know that when we flew there. The last night we watched lightning from the deck of our cabin. Kinda spooky knowing what was coming.

A couple years ago we were renting a house in Galveston when a hurricane blew east of us into Louisiana. Moderate winds and storm surge. That was the year Louisiana got hit by 3 hurricanes. Watching the water surge underneath the stilts on our house was pretty wild to see, especially for this flat lander Kansas kid.

I'm scheduled to go to Cozumel, Mexico on the 18th. Both Helene and now Milton originated in that area. Coz got some wind and wave action but only tropical storms as they moved north.

Out of curiosity, what does a hurricane do to diving? Does it really change the bottom of gulf/ocean and make it new and interesting, or does it just make it a mess?

LOL, I meant the aftermath of a hurricane. As much as I don't like Smit's politics, I would never wish harm on him. Besides, he lives in a red state, his vote don't mean a thing.

Hurricanes/typhoons make a big mess on a coral reef to 30 feet deep or so. Maybe deeper in some cases. Hard coral broken in to rubble, decimated soft coral. I saw lots of that in the Philippines. The deeper corals were ok, happily.

Something like the aftermath of a tornado.

It takes decades for a coral reef to recover from a very strong storm. :(

Sounds like nature is harder on Coral reefs than humans are...

I was concerned about that Tanker that sank near there. :o

That whole triangle.

I watch a lot of Docs on the reefs. All of them.

Crown of thorns and Lion fish invaders. >:(

My coworker is going to Disney World this week. Totally random that we ended up going on consecutive weeks. He's already in Florida visiting a friend. I don't know if it would be better at Disney or with the friend.

That sucks having back-to-back storms like that.

My wife's brother lives in Florida, and her sister lives in Georgia, so I hope they and everyone else are safe through this next one.

My niece lives near Disney. A hurricane traveling west to east went right over their house without causing damage. It lost a lot of wind speed going over land and picked up speed again when it hit the Atlantic ocean. It wasn't a cat 5 storm though.
