I used to think Kansas was the midwest. I mean, you can't get more "mid" than us, and we are west. Now it seems that when people say the midwest, it seems they are talking about the north central part of the country. We are referred to as the great plains.
The one that gets me is Ohio. It's right next to Pennsylvania, yet still referred to as midwest.

I learned something about America's heartland some years ago. Someone through eMC. His kid was a D1 athlete and I was varying to get his kid to consider USC. He, his wife and son had already taken a carefully curated by USC trip out to LA.

What really struck me about our conversation was his impression of Los Angeles. He told me "the people that live in the shadow of USC don't seem care about their community. They allow it to accumulate trash. They allow it's walls to be defaced. They allow their yards to look like nobody cares.... I will not allow son to spend his formative young adult years in a place that doesn't appear to care."

I could not argue one single point. LA is a shithole. Sure there are pockets of beauty, but there are also large portions of the city that are literal wastelands. Trash. Graffiti. Vandalism. Abandoned cars and all other sorts of things that indicate that those that call it home do not give one single shit about their community.

The people that have the nerve to call the Midwest a "wasteland" while pointing to California as a beacon of light... those people... bless their hearts, really should get a clue.

I think that people here have real relationships. I know that when I told people here that my daughter had cancer, that real people felt my pain. That real people prayed for her. I know that I have felt deeply saddened when people from this forum have passed away. So in that sense it's real. I guess that I also know that in face to face conversations if people say hurtful things, they stand the chance of being punched in the face, and on this forum that option is removed. so in that sense it's a little further removed than 2 neighbors sharing conversation over coffee.
