For future proofing your system to last at least 5 years you need 64GB of RAM, 128GB would be best and a fast CPU.

Yes, ok, but the processor?
Is it worth it for the I9?
It's a fair chunk of change, what about the gpu?
only the rtx 4000?

I would not even consider an i5 for a Cad/Cam machine
i7 would be the baseline entry
rtx 4000 would be the minimum if you work with a lot of solids
if you work is mostly wireframe, an rtx 2000 and 3000 would be OK, but Verify performance will suffer.

The Lite Desktop on this link would be a good bare bones machine

You could probably build something similar yourself for $1200/1500

that machine will rock... and last you 3 to 5 years
the Boxx I have at work is 6 years old now and has never had a problem
It's slow by today's standards though.. and I have upgraded the video card

That would work as far as specs, except gcode says desktops are a better choice, I saw a big difference between my desktop and the comparable laptop of the same make/specs

that's just personal preference.
if you need portability, a laptop is a must. I don't
I prefer desktops because you can over clock them, they run cooler, you can update video cards
swap out hard drives memory etc etc etc.
plus I just can't work with a 17" screen anymore
I'm running 2 Dell 24" Ultrasharp's with a 27" Ultrasharp in the middle.
I'm guessing that could be done with a laptop and a docking port, but
I don't need portability, so why go to the trouble.

Crazy millman is running a Dell workstation grade laptop with dual Xeons and 128 of ram and
a very high end quadro.... he does crazy stuff with it ... and he spent crazy money for it

It just depends on what you need.
At one point I needed a laptop and I bought a nice Dell.
I've still got it.. and still keep it up to date, but I haven't actually used it in years.

Desktops will give you the same or better performance for less cost as Tom stated as well as having better monitors. The laptop can be hooked to a single monitor.

I've hypothesizing I'm better off getting a machine at 80% of top of the line, but every 2.5 years, rather than 90% of top of the line every 5 or 100% every 7.5.  Cost per year is about the same, but the area under the curve is greater with the 80%.

Sorry to bother you guys more, going through the numbers, it makes a bit more sense to order parts and build it here.
Where do I order parts Ebay from a seller with good rep?

It may be difficult to find good video cards right now.  I'm not sure if the quadro cards are popular in the crypto world so maybe that wont be an issue?
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.
