the 3090's are very popular, cards like the RTX4000, RTX5000 are not necessarily the best suited for mining, while they work quite well for CAD/CAM

Mining should not be done using these graphics cards combines together anyway.
The custom riggs end users create pose a great risk of fire from all the graphic cards drawing power..

The riggs like antminer etc are more efficient and cheaper. You can buy as many as you want on ebay or what not..

For the most part graphics cards are sold out at all the manufactures, but a 3rd party will sell it to you for an extra hundred bucks or so.
Most of the shortage is people bulk ordering as many as they can and then reselling them.
The mining doesn't help of course.

Sorry to bother you guys more, going through the numbers, it makes a bit more sense to order parts and build it here.
Where do I order parts Ebay from a seller with good rep?

Newegg is pretty good.
I used to buy a ton of stuff from Amazon, because they had good prices and were super convenient.
however,
Amazon is blacklisted at gcode's house these days given their fascist censorship and book banning policies.

I added 64g of ram to my machine a couple of weeks ago.
Normally I'd have bought it from Amazon and never thought twice about it
but I bought it here instead

I've been buying my big ticket electronics stuff from Best Buy.. they match Amazon's prices
and shipping is free.
I prefer to pick high value stuff myself as porch pirates are rampant in Cali these days.

Good video cards are hens teeth right now due to crypto mining.  That's the only reason I bought a prebuilt.  When I do build (every other computer in my life) I like Microcenter and Newegg for parts.  A few years ago I had dirty power frying power supplies, motherboards, and video cards for a while until I got a power conditioner, and the affore mentioned replaced the dead parts free of charge.

Peter,

There has to be tons of computer shops in Quebec that sell components.

No budget for new laptops this year... at least until I have a project that demands it. :(

I'm in the same boat.
My home PC is a really nice 15 month old  OC'd i9 and I've been working at home for almost 6 months.
My work machine was very nice in it's day, but it's 6 years old now.
They've called me back to the office and driving this old sled is killing me.
We're kind of slow right now and I'm not even thinking about asking for a new machine.
I save the big ticket groveling and begging for maintenance renewal and such.

Bare minimum I'll get a service contract extension so if something happens I'm covered. Next day service. I've used it twice. I had 2 CPU fans fail. Other than that, it's a solid rig. The tech marveled at how well cared for my laptop was. I take care of company property better than I take care of my own property.

I know that if I HAD to have a new one I'd get it. The company knows I don't ask for stuff willy-nilly. But I look at this as a silver bullet situation. I use them sparingly. With the exception of the REALLY large projects, this laptop still does the job.

Whomever gets it when I do finally get a new one (most likely my son will get it since he got my last old one - he's in Service and doesn't require the kind of horsepower I do) will be getting a like new rig. I'll FORMAT C:/ install fresh OS and she'll be good to go.

Samsung is now offering the 980Pro drives with a heat sink. Not sure that is worth an extra $70.
